CONSIDER JOINING CHOIR!

If you might be interested in singing with either the 9:00 a.m. Contemporary Choir or the 11 a.m. SATB choir, please contact St. Pat Baker 412~781~0186 x 17 ASAP. Both choirs would love to have you join them to enhance our parish's music ministry program. The Contemporary Choir practices on Tuesday evenings and the SATB Choir practices on Wednesday evenings. Rehearsals begin the first week of September.

ADULT EDUCATION UPDATE

Join our Parish Group for Handing on the Faith (PGHFaith) this Sunday morning, August 19, at 10 a.m. in Marsico Library as we consider the role of Christian service in our lives. Where did our practices of service come from? What "qualifies" as Christian service for us? How might we encourage a sense of Christian service in our children? We will also look at some of the opportunities available in our parish for service. Any interested adult or teen is welcome.

The August edition of the "Catechism for US" newsletter is still available in Marsico Library for subscribers who chose the pick-up option. Mail subscribers should already have received the your copy. Contact Andy Bechman if you have a question about the newsletter.

MINISTRY OF PRAISE

In preparation for a new prayer list, we are inviting all parishioners to place their petitions for prayers in the "Ministry of Praise" boxes in the vestibules of the church. We use no last names. If you would like to pray, please write your name and address on paper and place the paper in the box. We will mail you a prayer list. We pray on our own time in our own homes at our own convenient times. We have no meetings. We just pray!

BULLETIN CONNECTION

There is a world of choices out there. Many of us may have a choice of breakfast cereals in the morning, as well as a choice of beverages. In my house there's coffee, tea, milk, water, or juice readily available on any given morning. Choosing one over the other is not an earth-shattering decision, and time does not stand still until a choice is made.

How different from this weekend's Gospel in which Jesus alludes to the critical choice that a person must make in his or her own life.

We often hear about making healthy choices in the food we eat. One breakfast cereal has a campaign in which an adult explains to a child how the cereal the adult is eating will help with a cholesterol test. The implication is that choosing this cereal over others will improve one's life.

That could well be the case, but there is an even more basic choice for us if we want to improve our lives. That choice is for Christ or against Christ. How will your choice improve your life?

GOLDEN WEDDING CELEBRATION

The Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh is again planning its annual Golden Wedding Celebration for the couples who have been married for 50 years. This year's celebration will take place on Sunday, October 7, 2007, beginning with a Mass at 3:00 p.m. at St. Paul Cathedral. A reception will follow at Oakland Catholic High School.

If you are a parishioner celebrating your 50^th wedding anniversary in 2007, and would be interested in attending the celebration along with the other jubilarian couples, please call the rectory or drop a note in the weekly collection basket. Invitations will be sent out after responses have been received.

SPIRITUAL PODCASTS TARGET

BUSY MEN

The Catholic Men's Fellowship of Pittsburgh and the diocese's Department for Evangelization are producing weekly audio spiritual podcasts, specifically geared toward men, on the upcoming Sunday Scripture readings. Jeff Ludwikowski, co-executive director of the Catholic Men's Fellowship of Pittsburgh, said the weekly podcasts stem from a desire to respond to Pope John Paul II's "call for a new evangelization by utilizing new technologies to reach men who may not be tied into traditional methods of faith formation." The 10-minute podcast is available on the Web site of the National Fellowship of Catholic Men (www.catholicmensresources.org). A podcast is a digital media file, or a series of such files, distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players and personal computers. The Ref. James Wehner, director of the Department for Evangelization, is the "voice" of the podcasts. The initial target population was computer-savvy men who lacked time for spiritual reading. But Father Wehner noted that the audience is much broader than originally anticipated.

SACRAMENTS

INFANT BAPTISM is celebrated at noon on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month. Please make arrangements with the parish secretary at least 2 weeks prior to the desired date.

ADULT BAPTISM The R.C.I.A. program sees to the needs of adults who wish to become Catholic. Call the pastor for information.

RECONCILIATION (CONFESSION) is celebrated on Saturday, after 9:00 a.m. Mass and after Saturday evening Mass, and also by appointment.

EUCHARISTIC LITURGY SCHEDULE:

Anyone who is married in a civil ceremony and wishes to sacramentalize the marriage should contact the pastor. Anyone planning to celebrate their 25th or 50th anniversary should contact the parish office well in advance of the desired date.
