PARISH PICNIC

The St. Scholastica Parish Picnic will be at Squaw Valley Park on Sunday, September 30^th from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Sign-up sheets are in the vestibule for attendance, side dishes and volunteer opportunities. Since last year's Centennial Picnic was such a success, we are staying with a similar schedule: 3:00 pm Kids Games, 4:00 pm Parish Game, 4:30 pm Dinner, 5:30 pm Bingo and Moon Bounce from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. VOICES ON BEHALF OF PEACE

"Every being is an abode of God, worthy of respect and reverence" (Hindu Scriptures).

True knowledge of religion breaks down the barriers…" (Gandhi, From Yeravda Mandir).

"To prevent the next war, we have to practice peace today. If we establish peace in our hearts and in our ways of looking at things, war will not come. The only way to stop a war is to have real peace" (Thich Nhat Hanh, Touching Peace).

BULLETIN CONNECTION

The debate on immigration policy is not unlike the one about salvation which is reflected in today's Gospel. In effect, the question is the same: who gets in, and who is left out? Portrayed as a land of opportunity in literature, entertainment, and pop culture, the United States is an attractive destination to many who are seeking a better way of life. Here, in this country, they believe that they can attain something that is beyond their reach in their own land. The question raised by those already here is, "How sustainable is this constant influx of people?"

The question posed to Jesus was, "Who gets into the kingdom of heaven?" Unlike the limited resources of a nation, the kingdom of God is limitless. But there are still some criteria for getting in. What Jesus points out is that these criteria are not set up by human enactment, but by God. We may all be surprised by whom we are dining with at the table in the kingdom of God!

CHILDREN'S LITURGY OF THE WORD

The Children's Liturgy of the Word will resume on September 9 at the 9:00 Mass. This is a celebration of the Liturgy of the Word designed especially for children in pre-kindergarten through the fifth grade. Parents will be welcome to accompany the children if they wish.

Please pray for Norman Krist who died and was given Christian burial from our Church. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

SECOND COLLECTION TODAY FOR DISASTER RELIEF

The second collection at all Masses today is for the victims and families of the recent disasters: the earthquake in Peru, the monsoons in South and Southeast Asia and the local flooding in Millvale and other areas of our diocese. Let's help our neighbors, near and far, at this time in their need.

Catholic Charities and the Diocese have been providing tangible assistance to families hardest hit by the local floods. Families are in desperate need of many items. SACRAMENTS

INFANT BAPTISM is celebrated at noon on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month. Please make arrangements with the parish secretary at least 2 weeks prior to the desired date.

ADULT BAPTISM The R.C.I.A. program sees to the needs of adults who wish to become Catholic. Call the pastor for information.

RECONCILIATION (CONFESSION) is celebrated on Saturday, after 9:00 a.m. Mass and after Saturday evening Mass, and also by appointment.

EUCHARISTIC LITURGY SCHEDULE:

ANOINTING OF THE SICK is available for those who are chronically or seriously ill. Call the parish office. A service for Anointing of the Sick will be conducted annually.

MARRIAGE Anyone who wishes to marry should contact the pastor at least six months prior to the desired date. Anyone who is married in a civil ceremony and wishes to sacramentalize the marriage should contact the pastor. Anyone planning to celebrate their 25th or 50th anniversary should contact the parish office well in advance of the desired date.

HOLY ORDERS Please call the pastor if you feel you might be called to the priesthood or the diaconate.
