PARISH PICNIC

The St. Scholastica Parish Picnic will be at Squaw Valley Park on Sunday, September 30^th from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Sign-up sheets are in the vestibule for attendance, side dishes and volunteer opportunities. Since last year's Centennial Picnic was such a success, we are staying with a similar schedule: 3:00 pm Kids Games, 4:00 pm Parish Game, 4:30 pm Dinner, 5:30 pm Bingo and Moon Bounce from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. NEWS FROM CHRIST THE DIVINE TEACHER CATHOLIC ACADEMY

Welcome back students and their families! We started school this week on Monday, August 27th with an enrollment of 143 students in grades K-8 and 35 students in Pre-school. We have had lots of new and exciting things going on at the school over the summer. We have given the school a fresh new look by doing improvements that include painting, some new carpeting, and new steps. We have enhanced the security of our building by installing automatic locking mechanisms on our entrance doors through the generosity of several of our parents. BULLETIN CONNECTION

When I lived in the city, it was pretty common during the summer that on Sunday after church was barbecue time. One could walk up and down the block and see the smoke rising from 55-gallon drums that had been laid sideways and outfitted as homemade grills. Fourth of July and Labor Day, coming as they did at the beginning of the month when resources were more plentiful, were sure bets for ample feasts! It was not unusual to be at a backyard meal and wonder, "Now who's that?" I've never seen him before." The answer was always some "cousin" who happened to be in the area.

Now that I live in the country, my neighbors are farther away, and we must plan to get together. Feasts are less spontaneous, and there are fewer "cousins" who just happen to show up.

One way some of us have found to keep alive Jesus' message of Sunday's Gospel – "invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind" – is to make sure that we donate a percentage of the money we spend on the picnic to some group that helps the poor. It's a reminder to us that we can feast only because of God's great goodness.

AUTUMN SONG

SAVE THE DATE: Mark your calendars for the Aquinas Guild's "Autumn Song" luncheon, Saturday, October 20th at the Pittsburgh Field Club. "Autumn Song" is a special tradition in our parish and along with raising funds for the Aquinas Guild's good work, a great time is always had by all who attend. The delicious lunch will be accompanied by a teacup auction and a fashion show by Carabella. Don't miss it!

YOUTH GROUP NEWS

Attention all teens! Join us Sunday September 9th from 10-11am at the ministry center for INTERSECTION. This is an hour to think, learn, laugh, play, sing, eat and even make a few friends.

 

CHILDREN'S LITURGY OF THE WORD

The Children's Liturgy of the Word will resume next Sunday, September 9, at the 9:00 Mass. This is a celebration of the Liturgy of the Word designed especially for children in pre-kindergarten through the fifth grade. We ask that the children who are sent to the Children's Liturgy be comfortable leaving their parents and that they be able to sit reasonably still and attend to the service. Snacks and toys should be left behind because they distract the other children. Parents are welcome to accompany their children if they wish.

 

PGHFaith

Our Parish Group for Handing on the Faith (PGHFaith) is a group of adults who are attending to our own spiritual growth so that we might better pass our faith on to the young people in our community. We meet once a month on a Sunday morning at 10 a.m. in the Marsico Library. Our next meeting, "Adventures in Prayer," takes place on September 16. We will share our struggles and successes with prayer. Interested adults and teens are welcome.

CATECHISM FOR US

The September edition of the "Catechism for US" newsletter is available in Marsico Library this weekend for subscribers who chose the pick-up option. Mail subscribers should receive the newsletter soon if you have not already.

SACRAMENTS

INFANT BAPTISM is celebrated at noon on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month. Please make arrangements with the parish secretary at least 2 weeks prior to the desired date.

ADULT BAPTISM The R.C.I.A. program sees to the needs of adults who wish to become Catholic. Call the pastor for information.

RECONCILIATION (CONFESSION) is celebrated on Saturday, after 9:00 a.m. Mass and after Saturday evening Mass, and also by appointment.

EUCHARISTIC LITURGY SCHEDULE:

MARRIAGE Anyone who wishes to marry should contact the pastor at least six months prior to the desired date. Anyone who is married in a civil ceremony and wishes to sacramentalize the marriage should contact the pastor. Anyone planning to celebrate their 25th or 50th anniversary should contact the parish office well in advance of the desired date.

HOLY ORDERS Please call the pastor if you feel you might be called to the priesthood or the diaconate.
