PARISH MISSION

Father James Sichko of the Diocese of Lexington, Kentucky will lead a Mission at St. Scholastica Parish on October 14-17 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. each evening. Father Jim travels throughout the United States giving missions, retreats and days of recollection. Plan now to attend and invite your relatives and friends. Everyone is welcome!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF OUR YOUNG PEOPLE

WHO ARE BEING CONFIRMED ON OCTOBER 8

here at St. Scholastica Parish. Let us pray for them so that they will receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit with open hands, hearts and minds. With this sacrament they become full members of the Catholic Church. Consequently, they also must accept the responsibilities that come with membership. We urge their sponsors and parents to continue to give them not only good advice but also good example in how to live their Catholic faith.

LIFE CHAIN

A great way to celebrate RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY is to participate in LIFE CHAIN this afternoon in Sharpsburg. From 2 to 3p.m. people will stand on the sidewalk on Main Street, holding signs and silently praying for victims of abortion. Parking and signs are available at Jimmy G's Restaurant. Please join us and show that we care for unborn babies and their mothers.

BLESSING OF PETS TODAY

There will be Pet Blessing today, October 7, at 1:00 pm in front of the St. Francis statue. All pets, their owners, and friends of pets are welcome to attend.

A PARTY PARISH?

Some parishioners have had a wonderful time socializing and partying this past week. We had a wonderful golf outing and dinner dance this past Friday at the Longue Vue Country Club. We had a delightful parish picnic this past Sunday at Squaw Run Park.

Many thanks are extended to many people for planning and working so diligently to make these parties so successful. And once again, our patron saint, St. Scholastica, provided perfect weather days for our added enjoyment. Thanks to all. We hope you had a terrific time, twice.

A PRAYING PARISH?

Now that we have had time to party with one another, it is time to come to church and pray, and listen to Fr. Jim Sichko as he leads our parish mission. We are encouraging our active "church-going parishioners" to bring with you someone who has not been active in practicing their Catholic faith. Bring them back home with a gracious invitation, and pray that they will cooperate with God's grace in becoming practicing Catholics once again. Tell them that we sincerely miss them and that we would like to worship with them.

CATHOLIC CONVERSATIONS

Our new series started well last week when we met Fr. Frank Almade, new administrator of the Catholic parishes in Sharpsburg. Our next session is on Wednesday, October 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the Pastoral Center when we invite Dr. Christina Astorga to St. Scholastica. Dr. Astorga is from the Philippines, where she was the first layperson and the first woman to serve as chairperson of the theology department at the Jesuit university in Manila. She was recently named director of the Spiritan Center for the Study of Catholic Social Thought at Duquesne. "Catholic Conversations" aims at informative, engaging, and participatory talk. The session will begin as an interview and develop (we hope) into something more like a conversation. Those who attend will be invited to take part. There is no fee or registration.

OCTOBER COUNT

The Diocese of Pittsburgh asks each Catholic church to count the number of worshippers who come to our weekend Masses during the month of October. Our ushers will be counting at each Mass. This data is sent to the Diocese of Pittsburgh for their records.

YOUTH HAPPENINGS!

Tonight is our annual youth ministry scavenger hunt for warmth. We will divide into teams and race to collect badly needed cold weather items for the homeless. All middle school and high school youth are welcome. Meet at the ministry center at 6:30pm. Adult drivers are also needed. Hope to see you there!

Sunday Oct. 14th INTERSECTION from 10-1 a.m. 1 in the ministry center. We welcome all of our newly confirmed teens! Light breakfast is provided.

AQUINAS GUILD NEWS

Tickets are still available for the Aquinas Guild's annual "Autumn Song" luncheon and fashion show on Saturday, October 20th at noon at the Pittsburgh Field Club. Fashions will be provided by Carabella.

The Autumn Song Committee requests your help in making our annual benefit a success.  We welcome donations such as gift certificates to local restaurants/stores, hand crafted items such as knitted or crocheted sweaters, blankets or baby items and gently used treasures from your own home. Gardening items, chocolate, Italian foods, coffee and the like are also greatly appreciated for our themed baskets. If you are interested in making a donation to our auctions, please call Sue Goodwin at 412-967-0791 or Mary Benckart at 412-968-0828. SACRAMENTS

INFANT BAPTISM is celebrated at noon on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month. Please make arrangements with the parish secretary at least 2 weeks prior to the desired date.

ADULT BAPTISM The R.C.I.A. program sees to the needs of adults who wish to become Catholic. Call the pastor for information.

RECONCILIATION (CONFESSION) is celebrated on Saturday, after 9:00 a.m. Mass and after Saturday evening Mass, and also by appointment.

EUCHARISTIC LITURGY SCHEDULE:

Weekday Masses: Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m.

Saturday Morning - 9:00 a.m.

Weekend Masses: Saturday Evening 6:00 p.m.

Sunday - 7:30, 9:00, 11:00

HOLY EUCHARIST is available for those who are sick and confined to home. Call the parish office and we will bring the Eucharist to you.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK is available for those who are chronically or seriously ill. Call the parish office. A service for Anointing of the Sick will be conducted annually.

MARRIAGE Anyone who wishes to marry should contact the pastor at least six months prior to the desired date. Anyone who is married in a civil ceremony and wishes to sacramentalize the marriage should contact the pastor. Anyone planning to celebrate their 25th or 50th anniversary should contact the parish office well in advance of the desired date.

HOLY ORDERS Please call the pastor if you feel you might be called to the priesthood or the diaconate.
