PARISH PICNIC

The St. Scholastica Parish Picnic will be at Squaw Valley Park on Sunday, September 30^th from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Sign-up sheets are in the vestibule for attendance, side dishes and volunteer opportunities. Since last year's Centennial Picnic was such a success, we are staying with a similar schedule: 3:00 pm Kids Games, 4:00 pm Parish Game, 4:30 pm Dinner, 5:30 pm Bingo and Moon Bounce from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. NEWS FROM CHRIST THE DIVINE TEACHER CATHOLIC ACADEMY

Welcome back students and their families! We started school this week on Monday, August 27th with an enrollment of 143 students in grades K-8 and 35 students in Pre-school. We have had lots of new and exciting things going on at the school over the summer. We have given the school a fresh new look by doing improvements that include painting, some new carpeting, and new steps. We have enhanced the security of our building by installing automatic locking mechanisms on our entrance doors through the generosity of several of our parents. BULLETIN CONNECTION

When I lived in the city, it was pretty common during the summer that on Sunday after church was barbecue time. One could walk up and down the block and see the smoke rising from 55-gallon drums that had been laid sideways and outfitted as homemade grills. Fourth of July and Labor Day, coming as they did at the beginning of the month when resources were more plentiful, were sure bets for ample feasts! It was not unusual to be at a backyard meal and wonder, "Now who's that?" I've never seen him before." The answer was always some "cousin" who happened to be in the area.

Now that I live in the country, my neighbors are farther away, and we must plan to get together. Feasts are less spontaneous, and there are fewer "cousins" who just happen to show up.

One way some of us have found to keep alive Jesus' message of Sunday's Gospel – "invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind" – is to make sure that we donate a percentage of the money we spend on the picnic to some group that helps the poor. It's a reminder to us that we can feast only because of God's great goodness.

AUTUMN SONG

SAVE THE DATE: Mark your calendars for the Aquinas Guild's "Autumn Song" luncheon, Saturday, October 20th at the Pittsburgh Field Club. "Autumn Song" is a special tradition in our parish and along with raising funds for the Aquinas Guild's good work, a great time is always had by all who attend. Attention all teens! Join us Sunday September 9th from 10-11am at the ministry center for INTERSECTION. This is an hour to think, learn, laugh, play, sing, eat and even make a few friends.

 

CHILDREN'S LITURGY OF THE WORD

The Children's Liturgy of the Word will resume next Sunday, September 9, at the 9:00 Mass. This is a celebration of the Liturgy of the Word designed especially for children in pre-kindergarten through the fifth grade. We ask that the children who are sent to the Children's Liturgy be comfortable leaving their parents and that they be able to sit reasonably still and attend to the service. Snacks and toys should be left behind because they distract the other children. Parents are welcome to accompany their children if they wish.

 

PGHFaith

Our Parish Group for Handing on the Faith (PGHFaith) is a group of adults who are attending to our own spiritual growth so that we might better pass our faith on to the young people in our community. We meet once a month on a Sunday morning at 10 a.m. in the Marsico Library. Our next meeting, "Adventures in Prayer," takes place on September 16. We will share our struggles and successes with prayer. Interested adults and teens are welcome.

The September edition of the "Catechism for US" newsletter is available in Marsico Library this weekend for subscribers who chose the pick-up option. Mail subscribers should receive the newsletter soon if you have not already.

VOICES ON BEHALF OF PEACE

BULLETIN CONNECTION

The debate on immigration policy is not unlike the one about salvation which is reflected in today's Gospel. In effect, the question is the same: who gets in, and who is left out? Portrayed as a land of opportunity in literature, entertainment, and pop culture, the United States is an attractive destination to many who are seeking a better way of life. Here, in this country, they believe that they can attain something that is beyond their reach in their own land. The question raised by those already here is, "How sustainable is this constant influx of people?"

The question posed to Jesus was, "Who gets into the kingdom of heaven?" Unlike the limited resources of a nation, the kingdom of God is limitless. But there are still some criteria for getting in. What Jesus points out is that these criteria are not set up by human enactment, but by God. We may all be surprised by whom we are dining with at the table in the kingdom of God!

CONSIDER JOINING CHOIR!

If you might be interested in singing with either the 9:00 a.m. Contemporary Choir or the 11 a.m. SATB choir, please contact St. Pat Baker 412~781~0186 x 17 ASAP. Both choirs would love to have you join them to enhance our parish's music ministry program. The Contemporary Choir practices on Tuesday evenings and the SATB Choir practices on Wednesday evenings. Rehearsals begin the first week of September.

ADULT EDUCATION UPDATE

Join our Parish Group for Handing on the Faith (PGHFaith) this Sunday morning, August 19, at 10 a.m. in Marsico Library as we consider the role of Christian service in our lives. Where did our practices of service come from? What "qualifies" as Christian service for us? How might we encourage a sense of Christian service in our children? We will also look at some of the opportunities available in our parish for service. Any interested adult or teen is welcome.

MINISTRY OF PRAISE

In preparation for a new prayer list, we are inviting all parishioners to place their petitions for prayers in the "Ministry of Praise" boxes in the vestibules of the church. We use no last names. If you would like to pray, please write your name and address on paper and place the paper in the box. We will mail you a prayer list. We pray on our own time in our own homes at our own convenient times. We have no meetings. We just pray!

BULLETIN CONNECTION

There is a world of choices out there. Many of us may have a choice of breakfast cereals in the morning, as well as a choice of beverages. In my house there's coffee, tea, milk, water, or juice readily available on any given morning. Choosing one over the other is not an earth-shattering decision, and time does not stand still until a choice is made.

How different from this weekend's Gospel in which Jesus alludes to the critical choice that a person must make in his or her own life.

We often hear about making healthy choices in the food we eat. One breakfast cereal has a campaign in which an adult explains to a child how the cereal the adult is eating will help with a cholesterol test. The implication is that choosing this cereal over others will improve one's life.

That could well be the case, but there is an even more basic choice for us if we want to improve our lives. That choice is for Christ or against Christ. How will your choice improve your life?

GOLDEN WEDDING CELEBRATION

The Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh is again planning its annual Golden Wedding Celebration for the couples who have been married for 50 years. This year's celebration will take place on Sunday, October 7, 2007, beginning with a Mass at 3:00 p.m. at St. Paul Cathedral. A reception will follow at Oakland Catholic High School.

If you are a parishioner celebrating your 50^th wedding anniversary in 2007, and would be interested in attending the celebration along with the other jubilarian couples, please call the rectory or drop a note in the weekly collection basket. Invitations will be sent out after responses have been received.

SECOND COLLECTION

There will be a second collection for the Catholic Communications and Catholic University of America Campaigns the weekend Masses August 25 and 26.

SPIRITUAL PODCASTS TARGET

BUSY MEN

The Catholic Men's Fellowship of Pittsburgh and the diocese's Department for Evangelization are producing weekly audio spiritual podcasts, specifically geared toward men, on the upcoming Sunday Scripture readings. Jeff Ludwikowski, co-executive director of the Catholic Men's Fellowship of Pittsburgh, said the weekly podcasts stem from a desire to respond to Pope John Paul II's "call for a new evangelization by utilizing new technologies to reach men who may not be tied into traditional methods of faith formation." The 10-minute podcast is available on the Web site of the National Fellowship of Catholic Men (www.catholicmensresources.org). A podcast is a digital media file, or a series of such files, distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players and personal computers. The Ref. James Wehner, director of the Department for Evangelization, is the "voice" of the podcasts. The initial target population was computer-savvy men who lacked time for spiritual reading. But Father Wehner noted that the audience is much broader than originally anticipated.

DIOCESAN ON-LINE DATABASE

We want to thank everyone who has registered in the St. Scholastica volunteer database. We are off to a good start but we need all volunteers of our parish to be register. This includes Ushers, Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, All Choir Members, Youth Ministry, and Children's Liturgy of the Word Leaders, M.U.M.'s Helpers, and any other Adult Volunteers. We understand that this is an involved process; however, your participation in this database is required. This Policy is not in any way to discourage anyone from volunteering in our church - It is for the safety of our children

The first step is obtaining a computer; go to the Diocese of Pittsburgh website: www.diopitt.org scroll down until you see a light blue icon that says "Diocese of Pittsburgh Database Application". Click on this and it immediately takes you to the application. You must first create a login and password for yourself and then follow the instructions to complete the application. You will need the St. Scholastica Parish Access Code: PROTECT. Once the background check has been cleared you will be accepted in the St. Scholastica Volunteer Database and given further instructions by the Site Administrator.

CONSIDERING CHRISTIAN SERVICE

In the Gospels, Jesus presents service to others as the criterion for judging our devotion to Him. What role has Christian service played in your life? Would you like to increase that role? How might we encourage a sense of Christian service in our children? Join our Parish Group for Handing on the Faith (PGHFaith) on Sunday morning, August 19, at 10 a.m. in Marsico Library as we consider these questions. We will also look at some of the opportunities available in our parish for service. Any interested adult or teen is welcome.

BULLETIN CONNECTION

What would you do if you got a phone call on Tuesday afternoon and the person on the other end of the line said (in German-accented English), "Hello! This is Pope Benedict. I heard you were at church on Sunday and I'd like to come over on Wednesday evening to talk with you about the Gospel?"

While none of us would receive such a phone call, even if we did, it's a sure bet we wouldn't be thinking about Sunday's Gospel for the next 24 hours! We would be worried about cleaning the house, what to cook, and how to act since we've never had the pope over for dinner before.

But Pope Benedict would be one of the first to say that getting together to talk about the Scriptures is not about him coming over, but about Christ being present to us in the Gospel. Indeed, the true master of the house shows up every time we open our Bibles to read the Scriptures. Read a Gospel passage at home and let the Master into your heart!

GRIEF SUPPORT GROUPS

The Bereavement Ministry of St. Bonaventure Parish, Glenshaw, is offering a seven-week grief support group this Fall. We invite anyone who is grieving the death of a loved one to join us for this free series of meetings.

An afternoon Grief Support Group will be held 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. beginning Friday, September 7, 2007 to Friday, October 19, 2007

ALL SAINTS SUMMER FESTIVAL 2007

All Saints Church, Etna, is having its annual Summer Festival on Wednesday, August 15 through Saturday, August 18 at the church grounds on Dewey Street in Etna. Rides for the kids, bingo, games and food available every night. Dinners served nightly from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with the menu changing daily. Polka Mass at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday with music provided by Larry Placek Combo. Parade on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. Stands open at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday; 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. $500 raffle every night, plus $4,000 raffle Saturday night.
