LIFE CHAIN

One hour, one day, every year, Christians across America gather to give prayerful witness to the sanctity of unborn babies. The local Life chain will be held Sunday, October 7th (RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY), from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., in Sharpsburg on Main St. from 13th St. to 22nd St. Signs (with prayers on the back) and parking available in Jimmy G's parking lot at 1822 Main St. The signs read "ABORTION KILLS BABIES", "ABORTION HURTS WOMEN", "JESUS HEALS". Families are welcome. If standing is difficult, you are welcome to bring a lawn chair. Please come and pray for those who cannot help themselves.

YOUTH NEWS!

MIDDLE SCHOOL FAITH RALLY Sat. Oct. 27th 7-9pm All 6-8th graders are invited to join hundreds of middleschoolers from around the diocese for an evening filled with music, dancing faith witness and FUN! Chris Padgett, nationally known recording artist will headline for the evening. Jamie Dillon will kick the night off! Price is $10 per person (which includes a shirt) Parents are FREE (because we want to encourage you to come too!) SCAVENGER HUNT FOR WARMTH Sunday Oct. 7th. This event is for middle school and high school youth and parents. We will meet at the ministry center then race against each other to collect much need blankets, jackets and related items for the homeless. Yes, there will be prizes for the winning team. Adult drivers are needed. 6:30-8:00 pm.

WE WELCOME FATHER JOY VELLATTUKARA of the Imphal, India, diocese who will make an appeal during all of the weekend Masses for an Old Age Home For The Destitute. Please be generous to this worthwhile cause.

PARISH MISSION

Father James Sichko of the Diocese of Lexington, Kentucky will lead a Mission at St. Scholastic Parish on October 14-17 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. each evening. Father Jim travels throughout the United States giving missions, retreats and days of recollection. Plan now to attend and invite your relatives and friends. Everyone is welcome!

AQUINAS GUILD NEWS

The Aquinas Guild will hold its annual "Autumn Song" luncheon and fashion show on Saturday, October 20th at 11 am at the Field Club. Fashions will be provided by Carabella.

The Autumn Song Committee requests your help in making our annual benefit a success. We welcome your donations for our teacup and silent auctions. Always popular are gift certificates to local restaurants/stores, hand crafted items such as knitted or crocheted sweaters, blankets or baby items and gently used treasures from your own home. Our themed baskets have been particularly popular at recent benefits. Women of the parish have shown great skill and imagination in assembling attractive baskets filled with an assortment of items centering around a theme such as gardening, chocolate, Italian or coffee. PGHFaith

Our Parish Group for Handing on the Faith (PGHFaith) is a group of adults who are attending to our own spiritual growth so that we might better pass the faith on to the young people in our community. We meet once a month on a Sunday morning at 10 a.m. in Marsico Library. We are in the process of choosing topics for our next set of sessions. At 7:00 pm, Thursday, September 27 here at St. Scholastica Parish. The recitation of the holy rosary will follow the Mass. We pray for him as he begins his episcopate in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. We also pray for the Church of Pittsburgh that we may continue to grow in love of God and neighbor.

MISSION APPEAL

MEET THE NEW GUY ON THE BLOCK

Or perhaps we had better say, the new pastor in the neighborhood. Fr. Frank Almade is pastor of the Catholic Community in Sharpsburg, and an important figure in the Dioceses's efforts to sustain ministry in parishes as the number of priests decline. He is also our first guest in a new series called "Catholic Conversations," which aims at informative, engaging, and participatory talk. The session will begin as an interview and develop (we hope) into something more like a conversation. Then, the people who are attending will be invited to take part. Join us on Wednesday evening, September 26, beginning at 7:30 in the Pastoral Center. There is no fee or registration.

BULLETIN CONNECTION

Remember when there use to be a "Lost & Found" window in the big downtown department stores? It was a reminder that the hundreds of patrons inevitably left something behind. Such windows have been replaced by the more generic "Customer Service".

Local newspapers used to have a similar category in the classified ads. Now there is the less specific "Notices" or even the somewhat prurient "Personals".

Some may consider the demise of the "Lost & Found" to be a subtle indication of the direction that our culture has taken. Now when someone finds something, they consider it theirs. They think of themselves as lucky, to have had some good fortune.

The Gospel parables of the lost sheep and the lost coin remind us that it is not necessarily the "finder" that is the fortunate one. Jesus' conclusion "there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents" (Luke 15:7) indicates that it is the one who is found that is really the most blest. Have you been lost lately? Who found you?

AQUINAS GUILD MEETING

             The Aquinas Guild, St. Scholastica's woman's group, has been a part of parish life for 68 years. All women of the parish are invited to the first meeting of the year on Wednesday, September 19th starting at 12 noon in the Pastoral Center. A short business meeting with a light lunch will precede the guest speaker, Sister Mary Jo Mattes. Sister Mary Jo, a Franciscan from Mount Alvernia, will speak on Reiki, the Japanese healing art. MAY HE REST IN PEACE

Please pray for John Kirkwood who died and was given Christian burial from our Church this past week. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

ADVENTURES IN PRAYER

We know that prayer is essential to our growth in faith, but many of us struggle to find ways of prayer that work for us. Others may have a stable practice of prayer, but feel a prompting to deepen their prayer or try something new. Join our Parish Group for Handing on the Faith (PGHFaith) this Sunday, September 16, from 10 to 10:50 a.m. in Marsico Library for "Adventures in Prayer." We will share our successes in prayer and the difficulties that we face in praying so that we can support each other as we walk our pathways of prayer. There will be resources available to help you explore new ways of praying. Our meetings take place in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, with simple refreshments. Any interested adult or teen is welcome.

 

CATHOLIC CONVERSATIONS

There's plenty of talk going on around us, but how much conversation? According to thinker Theodore Zeldin, talk becomes conversation when "you start with the willingness to emerge a slightly different person." Join us for a new series called "Catholic Conversations." We will try to find people in the area who are doing interesting things related to their faith. Rather than just a talk, our sessions will begin as an interview of the guest and develop (we hope) into something more like a conversation. Then, the people who are attending will be invited into the conversation. Our first guest will be Fr. LET'S CELEBRATE!

Come to the St. Scholastica Parish Picnic at Squaw Valley Park on Sunday, September 30^th from 3pm to 7pm!  Sign-up is at the table in the vestibule.  Volunteer opportunities are posted on the easel.  Please consider volunteering to help with set-up, games, picnic, bingo or the clean-up.  We are also looking for people willing to loan baby pools, coolers, tubs, crock pots and roasters.  A parishioner or two with a truck are especially needed. 

PARISH MISSION

When over 1,000 people flock to church each night for a parish mission, you know the blessings must be abundant! St. Scholastica Parish has invited that priest to give a mission here from October 13 to 17, 2007. Known for his story-telling, Father Jim Sichko weaves everyday life experiences with the rooted messages which lay within the Gospel. More information will follow, but plan now to participate in these outstanding evenings of spiritual renewal!

AQUINAS GUILD MEETING

The Aquinas Guild will hold its first meeting of the year on Wednesday, September 19 in the Pastoral Center. Sister Mary Jo Mattes, a Franciscan nun from Millvale, will speak on Reiki, the Japanese healing art. A short business meeting beginning at noon will be followed by a light lunch. All women of the parish are invited to attend. Reservations are appreciated so that sufficient food can be prepared. Please call 412-963-0198.

BULLETIN CONNECTION

What's the calculation to be made in following Jesus? Today's Gospel presents a rather stark view: "Anyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple" (Luke 14:33).

St. Francis of Assisi took this message literally. He stood in the town square of Assisi, renounced his inheritance in his father's lucrative fabric business, and stripped off all his clothes, standing there naked to show his desire to follow Jesus.

Now I'm not suggesting that we leave all our clothing at the church door on Sunday! But the intensity of Francis' desire to become a disciple can be an inspiration for all of us. Is there one area of our life that could use a little more zeal in being a faithful follower? Is there some aspect of the Christian message that we are a bit lukewarm about? Is there something that we could let go of or put aside that would give us more time or energy to act as a disciple of Christ?

ADVENTURES IN PRAYER

We know that prayer is essential to our growth in faith, but many of us struggle to find ways of prayer that work for us. Others may have a stable practice of prayer, but feel a prompting to deepen their prayer or try something new. Join our Parish Group for Handing on the Faith (PGHFaith) next Sunday, September 16, from 10 to 10:50 a.m. in Marsico Library for "Adventures in Prayer." We will share our successes in prayer and the difficulties that we face in praying so that we can support each other as we walk our pathways of prayer. There will be resources available to help you explore new ways of praying. Our meetings take place in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, with simple refreshments. Any interested adult or teen is welcome.

CHILDREN'S LITURGY OF THE WORD

The Children's Liturgy of the Word resumes this Sunday, September 9, at the 9:00 Mass. This is a celebration of the Liturgy of the Word designed especially for children in pre-kindergarten through the fifth grade. We ask that the children who are sent to the Children's Liturgy be comfortable leaving their parents and that they be able to sit reasonably still and attend to the service. Snacks and toys should be left behind because they distract the other children. Parents are welcome to accompany their children if they wish.
