BULLETIN CONNECTION

We're happy to welcome forgiveness when it is given to us. We can be critical when it is offered to someone else. When people in Jericho saw that Jesus was going to dine at Zacchaeus' house they were scandalized that Jesus would consider eating with a sinner. But Zacchaeus, who had experienced the grace of salvation, stood his ground and was ready to make restitution.

The process of reconciliation is complicated. And, despite the seemingly quick conversion in the Zacchaeus story, reconciliation often takes a long time. The promise that Jesus makes is that he will be with us through the whole endeavor. As the Zacchaeus story also points out, we also don't enter on the path of reconciliation through our own initiative. Jesus invites us to be reconciled, just as he did with Zacchaeus when he looked up into the sycamore tree.

Zacchaeus was clear about those with whom he needed to be reconciled. Are you? And more importantly, are you ready to do it?

ALL SAINTS' DAY is one of the feasts that express the universality of Catholicism. Even a cursory study of the lives of the holy women and men who have gone before us makes that clear. "Saints are important to Catholics because their lives are stories of God's love…of God's immediate care for humans, and of the response of some humans to that love…God sometimes seems to display bad taste in the choice of his special loves. But there is no accounting for tastes when it comes to love." (Andrew Greeley in The Catholic Imagination.)

$3,647.00 was collected during the Mission for the benefit of St. Mark Parish in Kentucky. A $2,000.00 gift was given by the St. Scholastica Parish to the college students from their parish for their travel and missionary work in Texas. We thank Fr. Jim Sichko once again for his inspiring talks which jump-started many of us on our spiritual journey.

AQUINAS GUILD MEETING

The next meeting of the Aquinas Guild will be on Wednesday, November 7, starting at 10 a.m. in the Pastoral Center. No reservations are required. Guest speaker will be Vickie Dellaquilla of Organization Rules who will offer tips on how to declutter and organize so that moves are less stressful. She is author of "Don't Toss My Memories in the Trash." All women of the parish are invited to attend. A new Directory of Members is being published and will be available at the Christmas luncheon scheduled for December 4. To be included in the directory, all dues must be paid by November 15th.

ALL SOULS MEMORIAL SERVICE

Our annual All Souls Memorial Service will be held on Friday, November 2, 7:30 p.m. Please consider setting aside time to come to prayerfully remember deceased parishioners, family members and friends. We particularly invite anyone who has buried a loved one since last November 1 to come, be that from our parish or elsewhere. Let us gather in faith with those who have walked the path of sorrow and loss. Refreshments will be served in the Pastoral Center after the service.

Also, please take time during the month of November to write the names of your deceased loved ones in the Book of Life which will be located in the church vestibule throughout November.

BULLETIN CONNECTION

It is easy to point out the Pharisee in someone else, and much more difficult to see it in oneself. That is one of the hazards of self-righteousness. Coming to an awareness of one's own failings demands some reflection. It doesn't happen all on its own.

The parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector illustrates this very point. The Pharisee couldn't stop talking during his prayer. He went on and on about all of the things he was not, and then boasted about all of the things he did. On the other hand, the tax collector's prayer was simple and direct: "God, be merciful to me a sinner". He had time to listen.

Why not take five minutes each day to listen to God? Turn off the radio or TV. Sit in a quiet place. Empty your mind and start witht the words "God, be merciful to me a sinner." And then, listen!

WHERE DO WE DRAW THE LINE?

Torture is not an attractive thing to consider. Our government, while denying that it has tortured people in the war on terror, has defended various techniques of coercive interrogation and has turned prisoners over to other governments that might torture them. Catholic teaching opposes torture as a violation of human dignity, yet over 70% of Catholics in a 2005 Pew Research Center survey justified the use of torture under at least some circumstances. So it would seem that, like it or not, this is something we should talk about. Please join our Parish Group for Handing on the Faith this Sunday, October 28, at 10 a.m. in Marsico Library as we look together at the issue of torture and begin to work out what our responsibilities are as Christians and as citizens.

AQUINAS GUILD

Thank you to all who attended our highly successful "Autumn Song" luncheon this past Saturday. Thanks as well to our patrons, those who contributed to our auctions, and most of all to Shelley Peconi, luncheon chair, and her committee members who worked for months to make the day a success.

Elderly lady needs daily assistance and companionship in her home on Dorseyville Road. She is very small (96 pounds), sweet and cooperative, has limited ability to get around on a walker, needs help dressing, in the bathroom, some light housekeeping, and with meal (breakfast and lunch) preparation. Prefer someone with health care and elder care experience. Hours approx 10 AM to 4 PM daily, 3-5 days per week, some weekends possible. Pay $9.00-$10.00/hour, negotiable. OUR MISSION, CONDUCTED BY FR JIM SICHKO HAS NOT ENDED.

IT IS ONLY BEGINNING!

Fr. Jim's inspirational preaching, singing and story telling has ended. However, his challenging words should inspire us to "go out on mission" to live the words of Jesus Christ, and to invite others to join us in worship and in lived-faith.

Thanks to Fr. Jim. Thanks to the many parishioners who packed our church every night for four nights. Thanks to everyone who helped make this mission successful.

MINISTRY OF PRAISE

In preparation for a new prayer list, we are inviting all parishioners to place their petitions for prayers in the "Ministry of Praise" boxes in the vestibules of the church. We use no last names. If you would like to pray, please write your name and address on paper and place the paper in the box. We will mail you a prayer list. We pray on our own time in our own homes at our own convenient times. We have no meetings. We just pray!

BULLETIN CONNECTION

Radio and television evangelists will often turn to Scripture and use it as a proof text to make certain points. In doing so, they ignore some of the inherent contradictions that exist in the biblical text. So how do Catholics understand the reference in today's second Letter to Timothy which says, "All Scripture is inspired by God"?

For starters, we do not believe in a literal interpretation of the Bible. The Bible is first and foremost a theological document which speaks of our relationship with God and God's relationship with humankind. The bible is certainly not a scientific treatise, or even necessarily a history book, although we can find historical events in it.

God's inspiration of the biblical text is revelation, and in that revelation God shows that he is one who acts. Our God is not a distant, uncaring God, but one who interacts with humankind. Today's Gospel says as much: "Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones?"

RECYCLE YOUR OLD SNEAKERS!

Surely you have some old sneakers waiting to be thrown away.  Girl Scout Troop 86 is collecting old tennis shoes to be recycled into usable material for playgrounds.  A collection box will be place in the back of church next weekend and the collection will continue until November 9th.  Put those old shoes to good use.  (Please- no cleats.) 

AQUINAS GUILD NEWS

Steeler Tickets and More up for Auction! Two items from the "Autumn Song" luncheon are available for bidding in a silent auction format in the Pastoral Center after all Masses this weekend:

1.  Two tickets to the Steelers vs. Miami Monday night game on Nov. 26. 

2.  Two hours of playing time from the band "Shadows", a trio of keyboard, guitar and bass. Their fabulous dance music spans from the 40's through the 90's. This $300-400 value would be a fantastic addition to any upcoming party or gathering.

CATHOLIC CONVERSATIONS

Join us this Wednesday, October 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the Pastoral Center when we invite Dr. Christina Astorga to St. Scholastica. Dr. Astorga is from the Philippines, where she was the first woman and the first layperson to serve as chairperson of the theology department at the Jesuit university in Manila. She was recently named director of the Spiritan Center for the Study of Catholic Social Thought at Duquesne. "Catholic Conversations" aims at informative, engaging, and participatory talk. The session will begin as an interview and develop (we hope) into something more like a conversation. Those who attend will be invited to take part. There is no fee or registration.

PGHFaith

Our Parish Group for Handing on the Faith (PGHFaith) is a group of adults who are attending to our own spiritual growth so that we might better pass our faith on to the young people in our community. Our next meeting is next Sunday, October 28, at 10 a.m. in Marsico Library when we consider the topic: "Torture: Where Do We Draw the Line?"

WELCOME, FATHER SICHKO!

Father Jim returns to his roots in Pittsburgh this week in order to present a mission here at St. Scholastica Parish. His father was an "all star" football player at the University of Pittsburgh, and he still has relatives in the area. Father Jim currently serves as pastor of a parish and assistant to the Bishop in the Diocese of Lexington, Kentucky. Come and welcome Father Jim back to Pittsburgh! The mission is scheduled for October 14 to 17 beginning at 7:00 p.m. each evening.

YOUTH HAPPENINGS!

THE CATHOLIC CHARITIES FREE HEALTH CARE CENTER

PARISH MISSION

Father James Sichko of the Diocese of Lexington, Kentucky will lead a Mission at St. Scholastica Parish on October 14-17 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. each evening. Father Jim travels throughout the United States giving missions, retreats and days of recollection. Plan now to attend and invite your relatives and friends. Everyone is welcome!

WHO ARE BEING CONFIRMED ON OCTOBER 8

here at St. Scholastica Parish. Let us pray for them so that they will receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit with open hands, hearts and minds. With this sacrament they become full members of the Catholic Church. Consequently, they also must accept the responsibilities that come with membership. We urge their sponsors and parents to continue to give them not only good advice but also good example in how to live their Catholic faith.

LIFE CHAIN

A great way to celebrate RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY is to participate in LIFE CHAIN this afternoon in Sharpsburg. From 2 to 3p.m. people will stand on the sidewalk on Main Street, holding signs and silently praying for victims of abortion. Parking and signs are available at Jimmy G's Restaurant. Please join us and show that we care for unborn babies and their mothers.

BLESSING OF PETS TODAY

There will be Pet Blessing today, October 7, at 1:00 pm in front of the St. Francis statue. All pets, their owners, and friends of pets are welcome to attend.

A PARTY PARISH?

Some parishioners have had a wonderful time socializing and partying this past week. We had a wonderful golf outing and dinner dance this past Friday at the Longue Vue Country Club. We had a delightful parish picnic this past Sunday at Squaw Run Park.

Many thanks are extended to many people for planning and working so diligently to make these parties so successful. And once again, our patron saint, St. Scholastica, provided perfect weather days for our added enjoyment. Thanks to all. We hope you had a terrific time, twice.

A PRAYING PARISH?

Now that we have had time to party with one another, it is time to come to church and pray, and listen to Fr. Jim Sichko as he leads our parish mission. We are encouraging our active "church-going parishioners" to bring with you someone who has not been active in practicing their Catholic faith. Bring them back home with a gracious invitation, and pray that they will cooperate with God's grace in becoming practicing Catholics once again. Tell them that we sincerely miss them and that we would like to worship with them.

CATHOLIC CONVERSATIONS

Our new series started well last week when we met Fr. Frank Almade, new administrator of the Catholic parishes in Sharpsburg. Our next session is on Wednesday, October 24, at 7:30 p.m. in the Pastoral Center when we invite Dr. Christina Astorga to St. Scholastica. Dr. Astorga is from the Philippines, where she was the first layperson and the first woman to serve as chairperson of the theology department at the Jesuit university in Manila. She was recently named director of the Spiritan Center for the Study of Catholic Social Thought at Duquesne. "Catholic Conversations" aims at informative, engaging, and participatory talk. The session will begin as an interview and develop (we hope) into something more like a conversation. Those who attend will be invited to take part. There is no fee or registration.

OCTOBER COUNT

The Diocese of Pittsburgh asks each Catholic church to count the number of worshippers who come to our weekend Masses during the month of October. Our ushers will be counting at each Mass. This data is sent to the Diocese of Pittsburgh for their records.

YOUTH HAPPENINGS!

Tonight is our annual youth ministry scavenger hunt for warmth. We will divide into teams and race to collect badly needed cold weather items for the homeless. All middle school and high school youth are welcome. Meet at the ministry center at 6:30pm. Adult drivers are also needed. Hope to see you there!
