CHRISTMAS GIFT PROJECT

St. Scholastica's Christmas Gift Project to benefit children and families of western PA and West Virginia is underway. Please deliver wrapped gifts to the table in the hallway that leads to the Pastoral Center by noon on Sunday, December 9th. Please securely attach the gift tag you selected so that it is visible on your gift.

PLEASE COME TO SANTA'S WORKSHOP

Santa's elves have been very busy once again. For the third year, SANTA'S WORKSHOP will return to St. Scholastica in the Pastoral Center. CDTCA will again open the workshop for all parish families after Masses on the weekend of Dec. 1^st and 2^nd. Come and enhance your holiday shopping with a variety of decorative items, handmade crafts and inexpensive gift items.

This year there will also be 2 items to be raffled. There will be a 6 foot decorated tree with lights AND a handmade quilt. Tickets will be sold after the Masses. Be sure to take a look at these special items and get your raffle tickets.

HANDBELL CONCERT

Start your family's celebration of the Christmas season by attending the handbell concert  today at St. Scholastica Church. Noted handbell soloist Sue Garton will entertain with a selection of Christmas melodies. The concert, sponsored by the Aquinas Guild, will begin at 2 p.m. The event is free and is open to the general public, so please invite your neighbors and friends.

AQUINAS GUILD LUNCHEON

It's not too late to sign up for the Aquinas Guild Christmas luncheon on Tuesday, December 4th, at the Pittsburgh Field Club. The luncheon begins at 12 noon and the cost is $25.Please call in your reservation today, Sunday, December 2nd. You may call either 412-781-9489 or 724-353-3063. If you are attending and wish to participate in the Guild's service project, please bring a wrapped gift of baby clothing marked with size and gender. The gifts will be distributed to the Moms at Rosalia House.

CENTENNIAL CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS

We have some Centennial Christmas Ornaments from last year available for sale. The ball ornament is $5 and the pewter ornament is $18. Christmas Caroling Extravaganza!

This is open to all middle school and high school youth. First we will meet at Amber Woods in Harmar at 10 am, then we will go to lunch before we begin caroling at 1:00 at the Aspinwall VA Hospital. Join us for all or part of the day. Please bring a permission form. (www.stscholasticayouth.org).

ADVENT FAMILY GATHERING

Come with your family to explore the message of Advent next Sunday, December 9, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. We will gather for a potluck meal, prayer, song, a bit of learning and a service activity. If you would like to attend, please sign up in the back of the church this weekend. All parishioners are welcome at this event—we are, after all, a parish family!

VOICES FROM THE SCRIPTURES

Our Parish Group for Handing on the Faith (PGHFaith) will, from time to time, focus on particular passages from the Scriptures, so that we can understand them better as adults and share them more easily with our children. Our first such topic is "The Creation Stories in Genesis." We will meet on Sunday, Dec. 16, from 10:00 to 10:50 a.m. in Marsico Library in the Pastoral Center. Any interested adult is welcome to join us.

BLOOD DRIVE

INFANT BAPTISM is celebrated at noon on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month. Please make arrangements with the parish secretary at least 2 weeks prior to the desired date.

ADULT BAPTISM The R.C.I.A. program sees to the needs of adults who wish to become Catholic. Call the pastor for information.

RECONCILIATION (CONFESSION) is celebrated on Saturday, after 9:00 a.m. Mass and after Saturday evening Mass, and also by appointment.

CATHOLIC CONVERSATIONS

Mark your calendar for Thursday, November 29, at 7:30 p.m. when we welcome Fr. Radu Bordeianu to St. Scholastica. Fr. Radu is an Orthodox priest. Married and a father of three, he is an assistant professor of systematic theology at Duquesne. We will speak to him about Eastern Christianity, ecumenism and other topics. "Catholic Conversations" aims at informative, engaging, and participatory talk. The session will begin as an interview and develop (we hope) into something more like a conversation. Those who attend will be invited to take part. There is no fee or registration. Please note a change of venue for the November 29 meeting—we will gather in the Library of Christ the Divine Teacher Catholic Academy.

TO ALL ALTAR SERVERS

There will be a brief mandatory meeting of all altar servers with Father Duch to discuss current Mass procedures. All servers must attend one of these sessions.

ADVENT WREATH VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

It will soon be time to light the candles on the Advent Wreath. Volunteers are needed for lighting them during the weekend liturgies. Advent begins the weekend of December 1st and 2nd. Interested volunteers, please check the volunteer sign-up book in the back of the church and sign up by Nov. 18th.

BLOOD DRIVE

There will be a Blood Drive next Sunday, November 25th, 8am to 1pm in the St. Scholastica Pastoral Center. If you are at least 17 years old, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and are in good health, then you are most likely eligible to give blood. In about an hour (the actual donation only takes 10 minutes) you will save a life. Blood cannot be manufactured and it is perishable. Please give blood and ensure a safe and adequate blood supply for area patients. Please contact JoAnn Liebert at 412-767-4248.

Help the Pro-Life movement. Buy Christmas Cards from People Concerned for The Unborn Child. The new 2007 Christmas card depicts Jesus asleep in the manger The inside inscription reads "He is born as a gentle babe to bring our hearts His gift of Love." AQUINAS GUILD CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON

THE Aquinas Guild will hold its annual Christmas Luncheon at noon on Tuesday, December 4, 2007 at the Pittsburgh Field Club. We are offering the following luncheon selections: (1) Stuffed chicken breast, (2) Pork medallions with Port wine cherry sauce, or (3) Sole Veronique. NEW FEMINISM OR OLD SEXISM?

Our Parish Group for Handing on the Faith will meet this Sunday, November 18, at 10 a.m. in Marsico Library in the Pastoral Center. The topic is "Catholic New Feminism," and any interested adult is welcome to attend. The "new feminism" is a viewpoint among some Catholic women who think that 1970s feminism used a masculine model of success. Based in large part on Pope John Paul II's writings, it seeks to affirm women as women. Other Catholic women are not convinced, seeing the new feminism as a lot like the old sexism. If you are interested, you are invited to pick up "Redesigning Women," an article by Renee LaReau from US Catholic magazine. It is available in Marsico Library. (As you enter the Library, look for the low bookcase on your right. Copies of the article are there.)

BABY CLOTHING FOR ROSALIA HOME

As part of their Christmas celebration, the Aquinas Guild collects new items of infant clothing as Christmas gifts for the moms at The Rosalia Home. These items are given to the mothers and infants at their annual Christmas party. If any parishioner would like to donate an item, please bring it wrapped and marked with the "size" and "gender". The items can be placed in a marked box in the back of the church or given to an Aquinas Guild member by December 2.

Christ the Divine Teacher Catholic Academy is having it's annual Fall Book Fair after all Masses this weekend (11/10 & 11/11). As you start making plans for your Christmas shopping, please consider stopping by the Pastoral Center to browse the wonderful selection of books provided by the Aspinwall Bookshop. Remember – books make great gifts.

CDTCA participated in the Catholic Schools Championship Race with over 30 schools and 1400 runners. Medals were awarded to the top 25 finishers. Congratulations to CDTCA medal winners: Tatiana Sunseri, Claire Kintner, Jimmy Humphrey, and David Humphrey.

Earlier in the year, CDTCA runners Tatiana Sunseri, Claire Kintner, Jimmy Humphrey, and Evan Trop were also awarded medals at the Dorseyville Middle School Invitational. There, the top 30 finishers received a medal. Over 700 runners participated.

BLOOD DRIVE

There will be a Blood Drive Sunday, Nov. 25th, at St. Scholastica's Pastoral Center from 8am to 1:30pm. If you know someone who has cancer, been in an accident, had surgery or has been burned, then you probably already know someone who has used blood. CHRISTMAS IN ASPINWALL

Please join the Aspinwall Chamber of Commerce for their annual "Christmas in Aspinwall" Light Up Night, Thursday, November 15^th from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Christmas parade, Saturday, November 17^th at 11:00 a.m.

Thursday night the CDTCA 2^nd Grade will perform their live nativity at 7:00 p.m. on the corner of Brilliant Avenue and First Street. Then join all the festivities on Brilliant Avenue, First Street and Commercial Avenue until 9:00 p.m.

ANNUAL COLLECTION OF FOOD

FOR THE ELDERLY POOR

Once again this year at Thanksgiving time, the Little Sisters of the Poor have invited us to help them feed the elderly poor. Please bring your donation of food to church next weekend when you come to Mass on November 17 and 18. The Little Sisters will bring their van and collect the food at St. Scholastica's on November 19, the Monday before Thanksgiving. Your gift will make a difference. Thank you!

Our Parish Group for Handing on the Faith will meet on Sunday November 18 at 10 a.m. in Marsico Library in the Pastoral Center. The topic is "Catholic New Feminism," and any interested adult is welcome to attend. If you would like to prepare for the session, pick up "Redesigning Women," an article by Renee LaReau from US Catholic magazine. It is available this weekend in Marsico Library. (As you enter the Library, look for the low bookcase on your right. Copies of the article are there.)

The "new feminism" is a viewpoint among some Catholic women who think that 1970s feminism used a masculine model of success. CATHOLIC CONVERSATIONS

Mark your calendar for Thursday, November 29, at 7:30 p.m. when we welcome Fr. Radu Bordeianu to St. Scholastica. Fr. Radu is an Orthodox priest. Married and a father of three, he is an assistant professor of systematic theology at Duquesne. We may speak with him about Eastern Christianity, ecumenism, environmentalism or other topics. "Catholic Conversations" aims at informative, engaging, and participatory talk. The session will begin as an interview and develop (we hope) into something more like a conversation. Those who attend will be invited to take part. There is no fee or registration.
