BULLETIN CONNECTION

There is so much mystery surrounding the three Gentiles from the east who followed a star to find Jesus, that we don't even know what to call them. "Astrologers" says the Gospel today, yet sometimes we hear them called "Wise Men" and even "kings." Obviously, their exact identity wasn't important to the story. What was important? Their status as outsiders, if you will, aliens. Also important: their number – not the exact number three, but the fact that there were more than one of them. In this day of global positioning devices, satellite maps and turn-by-turn transmitted directions, we can't imagine anyone setting out on a journey of hundreds of miles only vaguely guided by a star and an ancient prophecy. In this we are correct – no one should ever do such a foolhardy thing. But three? Three is the number of the Divine. Three is a community, a family. Together these three astrologers could set out on this fantastic journey. If you are following a star, never travel alone.

An Anderson Tour Bus has been reserved for St. Scholastica parishioners to attend the annual MARCH FOR LIFE in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, January 22nd. It will be an exciting day. The bus will leave at 12:30am in order to arrive in Washington at 7am in time to attend the Youth Rally at the Verizon Center. There, we will attend Mass concelebrated by Archbishop Donald Wuerl and several hundred priests. Afterwards we will walk the four blocks to the Washington Monument for the MARCH FOR LIFE RALLY followed by the MARCH itself, up Constitution Avenue to the Supreme Court. There will be time to express our concerns to Senators Casey and Specter before we meet the bus at 5 pm for the return trip to Aspinwall. All members of the parish are invited. Jan. 5th FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT AND POTLUCK DINNER IN THE PASTORAL CENTER after Mass.  Bring a covered dish, salad, or dessert to share.  Since it is the Epiphany we will watch the acclaimed, "Nativity Story" which is rated PG.  Everyone is welcome.

THE ST. MONICA SOCIETY OF ST. SCHOLASTICA PARISH INVITES AND WELCOMES ALL CATHOLICS WHO DO NOT ATTEND MASS REGULARLY to join them on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at 10 am in the Pastoral Center for prayer, a light breakfast, and friendly conversation and inspiration. If you have inactive Catholics in your family, please ask them to join us.

IN CASE YOU DIDN'T KNOW...

Catholics in England during the period 1558 to 1829 were prohibited by law to practice their faith either in public or private. It was illegal to be Catholic until Parliament finally emancipated Catholics in England in 1829.

"The Twelve Days of Christmas" was written in England as one of the "catechism songs" to help young Catholics learn the basics of their faith. In short, it was a coded-message, a memory aid. Since the song sounded like rhyming nonsense, young Catholics could sing the song without fear of imprisonment. The authorities would not know that it was a religious song.

"The 12 Days of Christmas" is in a sense an allegory. Each of the items in the song represents something significant to the teachings of the Catholic faith. The hidden meaning of each gift was designed to help Catholic children learn their faith. The better acquainted one is with the Bible, the more these interpretations have significance.

The song goes, "On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me…"

The "true love" mentioned in the song doesn't refer to an earthly suitor, but it refers to God Himself. The "me" who receives the presents refers to every baptized person. i.e. the Church.

1st Day: The partridge in a pear tree is Christ Jesus upon the Cross. In the song, Christ is symbolically presented as a mother partridge because she would feign injury to decoy a predator away from her nestlings. She was even willing to die for them.
The tree is the symbol of the fall of the human race through the sin of Adam and Eve. It is also the symbol of its redemption by Jesus Christ on the tree of the Cross.

2nd Day: The "two turtle doves" refers to the Old and New Testaments.

3rd Day: The "three French hens" stand for faith, hope and love—the three gifts of the Spirit that abide (1 Corinthians 13).

4th Day: The "four calling birds" refers to the four evangelists who wrote the Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke and John—which sing the song of salvation through Jesus Christ.

5th Day: The "five golden rings" represents the first five books of the Bible, also called the Jewish Torah: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.

6th Day: The "six geese a-laying" is the six days of creation.

7th Day: The "seven swans a-swimming" refers to the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord.

8th Day: The "eight maids a milking " reminded children of the eight beatitudes listed in the Sermon on the Mount.

9th Day: The "nine ladies dancing" were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit found in Galatians 5:22-23: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.

10th Day: The "ten lords a-leaping" represents the Ten Commandments

11th Day: The "eleven pipers piping" refers to the eleven faithful apostles.

12th Day: The 'twelve drummers drumming" were the twelve points of belief expressed in the Apostles' Creed: belief in God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, that Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary, made man, crucified, died and arose on the third day, that he sits at the right hand of the father and will come again, the resurrection of the dead and life everlasting.

A BLESSED CHRISTMAS AND A JOYFUL NEW YEAR to all of our parishioners and your families. May the new year bring you God's blessings as you draw closer to the Lord in these coming days.

CHRISTMAS PRELUDE MUSIC

The choirs have prepared 30 minutes of Prelude Music for four of our Christmas Liturgies. Why not consider coming early to church to enjoy the beautiful music and to pause to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. The Youth Choir will begin to sing at 3:30 p.m., the Contemporary Choir at 6:30 p.m. and the SATB Choir at 9:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve. On Christmas Day, a Schola from the SATB will begin to sing at 9:30 a.m.

CHRIST THE DIVINE TEACHER CATHOLIC ACADEMY will be hosting the 2nd Annual "Basketball in Aspinwall" Christmas Classic from Thursday, December 27th - Sunday, December 30th. This event will feature basketball competition among 4 developmental (3rd and 4th grade) and 8 J.V. boys teams from schools throughout the Diocese of Pittsburgh to Aspinwall for a fun and good competition over the holidays. Any parishioners, school parents & community members interested in helping volunteer with concessions, admissions and other volunteer duties during these four days, please contact CDTCA's Athletic Assoc. The first three chapters of Genesis are among the most influential in the Bible. Join our Parish Group for Handing on the Faith (PGHFaith) as we explore where they came from, what they mean for us, and how we can share their meaning with our children. CENTRAL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

The placement test for eighth grade boys who wish to attend Central Catholic starting in fall of 2008 will be administered on Saturday, December 15th. There is a $10 fee for this test.
