FEBRUARY 15^TH STATIONS OF THE CROSS WITH BISHOP ZUBIK

Bishop Zubik will be at St. Scholastica's on Friday, February 15^th at 7:00 p.m. to lead the Stations of the Cross. Please make plans to attend. Let us pray with the bishop and one another as we walk together on the road to Calvary where Christ died for our sins.

WELCOME NEW PARISHIONERS

There will be a Welcome Breakfast in the Pastoral Center on Sunday, February 24, after the 9:00am and 11:00am Masses.  Please stop by after Mass to greet our new church members.

LENTEN FAMILY GATHERING

Mark your calendar for Sunday, March 2, when the Education Committee hosts a Lenten Family Gathering from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. There will be signup sheets available in the back of the church on the weekends of February 17 and 24. Look for more information in upcoming bulletins.

CASINO NIGHT AT THE RACES

Christ the Divine Teacher Catholic Academy is pleased to announce the 5th Annual "Casino Night at the Races" Saturday, March 1. Join us for this fun-filled evening where you can socialize with friends and try your luck on filmed horseracing, poker, blackjack, and other small games of chance with the proceeds benefitting CDTCA. Tickets are $20 per person and include dinner, beer, soft drinks and mixers, plus the opportunity to win some fabulous prizes. BULLETIN CONNECTION

Temptation is a universal human experience. As proof that there is no sin in being tempted, we see Jesus himself tempted by the devil in today's Gospel passage. As proof that the devil knows every angle to use to tempt each human being, we see in the first reading and the Gospel the clever ways the devil used to tempt both the woman, Eve, and Jesus by appealing to what was most important to them. Sin, of course, occurs when we succumb to the appealing temptations put before us. Don't be too hard on Eve unless you are sure you would have fared any better in her place! Sin entered the world through the woman and her husband, not because they invited it in, but because they couldn't withstand the temptation to "be like gods who know what is good and what is evil." And don't be too dismissive of Jesus, thinking that perhaps his three temptations were easy to resist because, after all, he is God. Jesus certainly is fully God; equally certain Jesus is fully human. No temptation we endure was beyond him. He knows the power of the evil one trying to get us to turn away from God. As we begin Lent, what better role model and champion could we have to help us overcome our own temptations?

ST. MARGARET HOSPITAL

Because the number of Catholic patients in St. Margaret Hospital continues to increase, there is a need for additional volunteers to help bring Holy Communion to them. If you are interested in knowing more about this important ministry of the Church, call Sister Marilyn at 412-781-0186 ext. 22.

AQUINAS GUILD MEETING

The Guild's first meeting of the new year will be held on Tuesday, February 12, starting at noon in the Pastoral Center. Sharing their recent experience in Italy, our guest speakers, Bernadette West and Judi Owen, will take us on a culinary tour of Tuscany. A short business meeting and a light lunch will proceed their presentation. All women of the parish are invited to attend. To insure sufficient food, we ask that you make reservations by calling 724-353-3063 or 412-963-9399. You may want to mark your calendars now for the Aquinas Guild's Lenten Day of Reflection which will be held on Thursday, March 6. More details will follow.

YOUTH HAPPENINGS!

INTERSECTION Sunday March 17 at the Ministry Center from 10-11. All teens are welcome to join us for great discussion and a light breakfast. (A leadership team meeting will follow). 

  MARCH 1 IS THE DEADLINE FOR REGISTERING FOR THE APPALACHIA MISSION TRIP. Our next meeting is March 1 in the pastoral center after the evening mass.  Our trip is scheduled for the week of June 22.

MARCH FOR LIFE

On January 22 the St. Scholastic bus journeyed to Washington for the MARCH FOR LIFE.  We had a great trip, 45 riders (25 students).  We attended the Youth Rally with Archbishop Wuerl and Bishop Zubik and then headed for the Rally and March.  We had a chance to attend a meeting with Senators Casey and Specter before we headed home.  A beautiful rainbow, as we were leaving Washington, reminded us how blessed we were.  Thank you to all our wonderful friends who made the trip possible by supporting the pancake breakfast, sponsoring a rider or donating money for the bus.  May God send His blessing to all who helped.

FOR YOUR MARRIAGE

February 10 is World Marriage Day. One new resource that may be helpful for married couples is "For Your Marriage," a website that has been set up by the United States Catholic bishops. It can be found at www.foryourmarriage.org. The website includes daily marriage tips, articles on issues that face couples, and discussions of Catholic teaching on marriage.

 

 FAITH AND POPULAR CULTURE

Popular culture in all its forms is an important part of our lives. But how does our faith relate to the music we listen to, and the TV shows and movies that we watch? Our Parish Group for Handing on the Faith's February topic is "Finding Inspiration in Popular Culture." We will consider pop culture productions that have inspired us, and talk about using them to pass the faith on to others. Please note that, in addition to our regular Sunday morning meeting on February 24 at 10 a.m. in Marsico Library, we are adding another PGHFaith session the previous Thursday afternoon, February 21, at 1:30 p.m. also in Marsico Library. It will be on the same topic. In addition, our February guest for "Catholic Conversations" is Rob Owen, the TV critic for the Post-Gazette. We will talk with Mr. Owen on Wednesday evening, February 27, from 7:30 to 9:00 in the Pastoral Center about faith and television. Any interested adult or older teen is welcome to PGHFaith and "Catholic Conversations."
