The Saint Scholastica Parish picnic will be at Squaw Valley Park on August 24^th. The first planning meeting will be held on Thursday June 5^th at 7:00 p.m.in the Pastoral Center. Anyone interested in helping is welcome to attend.

YOUTH INFORMATION

Register your 10-14 year old for CAMP HELPING HAND this summer. This mini camp is a great way to give you children the chance to serve others. July 1, 2, and 3 from 9-2. Adult drivers and chaperones are also needed. Adults may join us for one or all of the days! CHILDEN MUST BE REGISTERED BY JUNE 21. Call or email the youth ministry office.

FEAST DAY OF ST. ANTHONY

On June 11^th, St. Anthony Chapel on Harpster Street in Troy Hill will begin a Triduum (3 Days) of prayer with Mass & Novena for the intercession of St. Anthony. On Friday, June 13^th, the Feast Day of St. Anthony, Masses will be held at 8:30 am, 11:00 am, and 7:00 pm. On Wednesday, June 11^th, Mass will be held at 8:30 am & 7:00 pm. On Thursday, June 12^th, Mass will be held at 8:30 am & 7:00 pm. Come and join us in prayer.

BULLETIN CONNECTION

What does God want? From ancient times people have tried to find out. Bargains have been struck with God; offers have been made and so have demands. Has anyone really wanted to know what God wants, or are we really asking what we have to do to get God to give us what we want?

In today's readings we have poignant words from God. Through Hosea God says, "It is love that I desire, not sacrifice." In Matthew's Gospel Jesus says, "I desire mercy, not sacrifice." Both passages ask us to be honest – there's nothing we can really offer that will "buy" us what we want from God. The prayers we say, offerings we make, rules we keep don't require that God give us anything in exchange. God wants to give us what we need – freedom and healing from our sins.

RUMMAGE SALE

St. Anne Guild Annual Rummage Sale held at St. Gregory Parish in Zelienople will be Friday and Saturday, June 20-21 - doors open at 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Held in the Bergman Event Center, food will be available.

SACRAMENTAL DIMENSIONS OF CULTURAL PRACTICE

Many Hispanic wedding ceremonies feature the lazo, or lasso, and the giving of the arras, a small box containing 13 gold coins.

The lazo appears variously as a rope, a ribbon or a double rosary and is usually placed around the shoulders of the couple during the ceremony in order to symbolize the love that binds them together. According to CatholicBrides.com, the lazo as a wedding rosary – made up of two individual rosaries joined into one – is meant to "symbolize the unification of the couple through prayer. The traditional belief is if the couple prays the rosary every night their marriage will endure."

The 13 coins of the arras represent Christ and his 12 apostles. Usually the groom gives the box and coins to his bride during the ceremony to show that he has pledged to provide financial support for her in their new life. The bride promises to use the money wisely. "In these more modern times of two people often contributing financially to the household this custom still reflects the religious intent of a united couple managing finances through prayer."

With the large population of Latino people in all areas of the United States, the Quinceañera celebration for young women coming of age and being recognized as adults in the community is common almost everywhere. Many cultures and religious mark these rites of passage as a way of celebrating the importance of young people to the future of the community.

Until recently, there has lacked a formal ritual for Quinceañeras for those within the U.S. Roman Catholic church; priests and deacons have been left to adapt liturgies to the needs of the celebration. On August 7, 2007, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a formal ritual, approved by the Vatican, to be used in the context of eucharistic liturgies, with adaptations for Liturgies of the Word.

SACRAMENTS

INFANT BAPTISM is celebrated at noon on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month. Please make arrangements with the parish secretary at least 2 weeks prior to the desired date.

ADULT BAPTISM The R.C.I.A. program sees to the needs of adults who wish to become Catholic. Call the pastor for information.

RECONCILIATION (CONFESSION) is celebrated on Saturday, after 9:00 a.m. Mass and after Saturday evening Mass, and also by appointment.

EUCHARISTIC LITURGY SCHEDULE:

MARRIAGE Anyone who wishes to marry should contact the pastor at least six months prior to the desired date. Anyone who is married in a civil ceremony and wishes to sacramentalize the marriage should contact the pastor. Anyone planning to celebrate their 25th or 50th anniversary should contact the parish office well in advance of the desired date.

HOLY ORDERS Please call the pastor if you feel you might be called to the priesthood or the diaconate.
