ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY~HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION

Friday, August 15^th is a Holy Day of Obligation. Mass will be celebrated here at St. Scholastica on Friday the 15^th at 8:30 a.m., Noon, and 7:00 p.m. Our neighboring communities will be celebrating Mass as follows:

St. Edward Parish in Blawnox at 9:00 a.m. and Noon

St. Joseph Parish in O'Hara there will be a Vigil Mass on Thursday the 14^th at 7:00 p.m. then on Friday the 15^th at 9:00 a.m.

Catholic Community of Sharpsburg: St. Mary will have a Vigil Mass on Thursday the 14^th 4:00 p.m.; On Friday the 15^th, Masses will be held at Madonna at 7:30 a.m., St. Mary at Noon and 7:00 p.m. at Madonna.

DON'T FORGET!

The St. Scholastica Parish Picnic will be at Squaw Valley Park on Sunday, August 24th from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Sign-up sheets are in the vestibule for attendance, side dishes and volunteer opportunities.   Please take the time to sign up so we can estimate how much food to order.  Your help with the volunteer activities (clean up, set up, bingo, etc.) is also very much appreciated.  The schedule for the picnic will be as follows: 3:00 pm Kids Games, 4:00 pm Parish Game, 4:30 pm Dinner, 5:30 pm Bingo and Moon Bounce from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm.   Chicken, hot dogs, corn and beverages will be provided.   The cost of the picnic will be $5 per person with a maximum charge of $20 per family.  Watch the bulletin for updates!

LOW-GLUTEN ALTAR BREADS

Some of our parishioners are intolerant to wheat products. Low-gluten hosts are approved by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. These hosts contain only .01% of gluten. If you would like more information, please talk to Father Ken.

TRANSITIONS…

◦Next Sunday at the 11:00 a.m. Mass we welcome E. John Kelly C.S.S.R. (Redemptorist), as our presider. He is Sister Kathleen's brother and will lead us at Mass as we honor Sister Kathleen for her many years of service to our parish community. Following this Mass, there will be a reception to bid farewell to Sister Kathleen. Religious education students and catechists are especially invited.

◦Mrs. Gina Musser is our new Program Manager for Religious Education. She has been a catechist for many years and has also been supportive of our Youth Ministry. Her responsibilities will be the "managerial" part of the program: facilities, books and materials, registration and administrative tasks.

◦Mrs. Jamie Dillon will expand her scope of work in the parish. She will continue to be Director of Catholic Youth Ministry, but in addition she will coordinate our Eighth Grade Confirmation Program and will be responsible for support and supervision of our catechists.

◦A short note about Confirmation. The Pastoral Council unanimously recommended to me that Confirmation be moved from the Fall of Eighth Grade to the Spring. In mid or late September we will have a meeting with parents and eighth grade students about this years Confirmation Program.

WOMEN'S CATHOLIC SCRIPTURE STUDY

This is an in-depth study of EXODUS that will run September through May on Tuesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. (We will follow the Fox Chapel Area School District calendar.) The first class is Tuesday, September 9, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the St. Scholastica Parish Hall. Any woman (you don't have to be Catholic) is welcome to join this group! In addition to learning so much about our Lord and His Church, you will also have a great opportunity to fellowship with others in our community. The registration fee is $50 and covers all materials needed for the 30 week course. That is less than the price of a cup of coffee each week! THE YEAR OF ST. PAUL

Families of the diocese are invited to share in a special Family Fest for the Year of St. Paul. It will take place on Saturday, August 23, 2008 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at St. Paul Seminary. A Mass with Bishop Zubik presiding will highlight the event. There will be a catered picnic lunch, games, races, a tour of the seminary and lost more. The cost is $5 per person or $25 for the whole family. To register, make your check out to the Diocese of Pittsburgh and send it to the Office for Family Life and Catechesis, Diocese of Pittsburgh, 111 Blvd. of the Allies, Pittsburgh PA 15222. PROTECTING GOD'S CHILDREN

"Protecting God's Children" is a one-time seminar required by the Diocese, for any parish volunteer or staff person whose work in the parish puts them in contact with children. If you work with children in the parish, or are planning to teach a Religions Education class in the fall, or volunteer in any way in the school, why not take the time this summer to get this done? CONTEMPLATIVE OUTREACH 2008 ANNUAL CONFERENCE

The Enrichment Weekend will be held at the Pittsburgh Airport Marriott from Sept. 26-28.  Fr. Thomas Keating, OCSO, (Founder of Contemplative Outreach) and Fr. Laurence Freeman, OSB (Director of the World Community of Christian Meditation) will be giving presentations on the conference theme, Unity: Oneness in Contemplation. Details of the Conference, (including hotel reservation information and driving directions) as well as registration are available online at www.contemplativeoutreach.org. SACRAMENTS

INFANT BAPTISM is celebrated at noon on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month. Please make arrangements with the parish secretary at least 2 weeks prior to the desired date.

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BECOMING A CATHOLIC? R.C.I.A. is the process which enables adults to become initiated into the Church. Call the pastor for information.

RECONCILIATION (CONFESSION) is celebrated at St. Scholastica Parish on Saturday, after 9:00 a.m. Mass. For your convenience the parishes in our cluster have the following opportunities for reconciliation:

St. Joseph Parish in O'Hara has Saturday reconciliation from 3:30-4:00.

Madonna of Jerusalem has reconciliation on Wednesday evening from 5:30-6:45 and Saturday from 3:00-4:00 p.m.

HOLY EUCHARIST is available for those who are sick and confined to home. Call Sister Marilyn for assistance.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK is available for those who are chronically or seriously ill. Call the parish office. A service for Anointing of the Sick will be conducted annually.

MARRIAGE Anyone who wishes to marry should contact the pastor at least six months prior to the desired date. Anyone who is married in a civil ceremony and wishes to sacramentalize the marriage should contact the pastor. Anyone planning to celebrate their 25th or 50th anniversary should contact the parish office well in advance of the desired date.

HOLY ORDERS Please call the pastor if you feel you might be called to the priesthood or the deaconate.
