TRANSITIONS

Official Installation

Next Sunday, Bishop Zubik will preside at the 11:00 Mass. At that time, I will be installed as pastor of St. Scholastica. Pastoral Council members of both St. Thomas More and St. Scholastica Parishes will represent my transition between the two communities. There will be a reception following the Mass.

Now that I've been "in the saddle" for three weeks, I am settling into some daily routines of parish life and ministry. I am grateful for your continuing support and encouragement as we all adjust to new beginnings and new opportunities.

THANK YOU

Please join us as we say "thank you" and Godspeed" to Sr. Kathleen Kelly, S.S.N.D., after 20 years of service to the catechetical ministry of St. Scholastica Parish. Sr. Kathleen has decided that, though she will miss you, this is the appropriate time, given the change in pastors, to complete her service to the community of St. Scholastica. In a few weeks we will honor Sr. Kathleen at a Sunday Mass, immediately followed by a reception in the Pastoral Center. Please join us as we thank Sr. Kathleen for her many years of gracious service to our faith community. Former students and catechists are especially encouraged to participate. More information will be provided in future bulletins.

 

ADORATION OF THE

BLESSED SACRAMENT

Eucharistic Adoration on August 7^th and 8^th -- Pope Benedict XVI has called for a special Year of Saint Paul to begin June 28, 2008 and run to June 29, 2009 as a celebration of the 2,000th anniversary of the birth of the saint. Accordingly the Diocese of Pittsburgh has scheduled a Year of Eucharistic Adoration for the Year of St. Paul with each parish assigned days and times when the sacred host is to be placed outside the tabernacle and at least one worshipper is to be present at all times. St. Scholastica's has been assigned two such times: from 7PM on Thursday, August 7^th until 9AM on Friday, August 8^th and then again from 7PM on Monday, January 5^th until 8:30AM on Tuesday, January 6^th. All are encouraged to come to the Church and pray before the Blessed Sacrament during these scheduled times. Please consider committing to spend a scheduled hour of adoration during our assigned August 7^th through 8^th period by signing the book available in the entrance area.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION

On the weekend of August 9th & 10th, we are asking all religious education families to register for this coming year. After all the Masses we will accept registrations in the Pastoral Center.

LAST CALL!

The Diocese of Pittsburgh is planning its annual Golden Wedding celebration for couples who have been married for 50 years. The celebration will begin with a Mass at St. Paul Cathedral on Sunday, October 12 at 3:00 p.m. Bishop Zubik will be the celebrant. A reception will follow. If you and your spouse are celebrating your 50^th Anniversary any time during 2008, and would like to attend this joyous event, please call the rectory or drop us a line not later than this Monday, July 28. Invitations will be sent out after responses have been received.

RETREAT AND HEALING

Eileen George of Meet the Father Ministry will hold her annual retreat and healing service at Saint Pall of the Cross Retreat Center on August 22-24.

How does the Church help Catholics address political and socials questions?

Doing good and avoiding evil. (continued from last week)

Opposition to intrinsically evil acts also prompts us to recognize our positive duty to contribute to the common good and act in solidarity with those in need. Both opposing evil and doing good are essential. As Pope John Paul II said, "the fact that only the negative commandments oblige always and under all circumstances does not mean that in the moral life prohibitions are more important than the obligation to do good indicated by the positive commandment" (Veritatis Splendor, no. 52). The basic right to life implies and is linked to other human rights to the goods that every person needs to live and thrive—including food, shelter, health care, education, and meaningful work. The use of the death penalty, hunger, lack of health care or housing, human trafficking, the human and moral costs of war, and unjust immigration policies are some of the serious moral issues that challenge our consciences and require us to act.

Making moral choices.

Difficult political decisions require the exercise of a well-formed conscience aided by prudence. This exercise of conscience begins with always opposing policies that violate human life or weaken its protection. "Those who formulate law therefore have an obligation in conscience to work toward correcting morally defective laws, lest they be guilty of cooperating in evil and in sinning against the common good" (Catholics in Political Life, 2004).

When morally flawed laws already exist, prudential judgment is needed to determine how to do what is possible to restore justice—even if partially or gradually—without ever abandoning a moral commitment to full protection for all human life from conception to natural death (see Evangelium Vitae, no. 73).

Prudential judgment is also needed to determine the best way to promote the common good in areas such as housing, health care, and immigration. When Church leaders make judgments about how to apply Catholic teaching to specific policies, this may not carry the same binding authority as universal moral principles but cannot be dismissed as one political opinion among others. These moral applications should inform the consciences and guide the actions of Catholics.

INFANT BAPTISM is celebrated at noon on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month. Please make arrangements with the parish secretary at least 2 weeks prior to the desired date.

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BECOMING A CATHOLIC? R.C.I.A. is the process which enables adults to become initiated into the Church. Call the pastor for information.

RECONCILIATION (CONFESSION) is celebrated at St. Scholastica Parish on Saturday, after 9:00 a.m. Mass. For your convenience the parishes in our cluster have the following opportunities for reconciliation:

St. Joseph Parish in O'Hara has Saturday reconciliation from 3:30-4:00.

Madonna of Jerusalem has reconciliation on Wednesday evening from 5:30-6:45 and Saturday from 3:00-4:00 p.m.

HOLY EUCHARIST is available for those who are sick and confined to home. Call Sister Marilyn for assistance.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK is available for those who are chronically or seriously ill. Call the parish office. A service for Anointing of the Sick will be conducted annually.

MARRIAGE Anyone who wishes to marry should contact the pastor at least six months prior to the desired date. Anyone who is married in a civil ceremony and wishes to sacramentalize the marriage should contact the pastor. Anyone planning to celebrate their 25th or 50th anniversary should contact the parish office well in advance of the desired date.

HOLY ORDERS Please call the pastor if you feel you might be called to the priesthood or the deaconate.
