The Lenten call to repentance is a continuing challenge of the Gospels, so that we may grow and develop in our spiritual life. None of us should remain satisfied with our level of Christian awareness or the quality of our Christian living. The grace of God awaits us . We can let lent pass unheeded or grasp it with faith and love. Since Lent retains its ancient appeal to the penitential spirit of the People of God, we are reminded that we are to urgently make the entire Lenten season a period of special observance and prayer.

LENTEN REGULATIONS

1. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence.

2. The obligation of abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at the age of 14. The law of fasting (limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of 18-59. No one should consider this obligation lightly.
<DIR>
Those individuals who have a medical condition in which fasting may be considered harmful are not obliged to fast, but should perform some other act of penance or charity.
</DIR>
4. All members of the Christian faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten season beyond what is prescribed by the law.

FEBRUARY 15TH STATIONS OF THE CROSS WITH BISHOP ZUBIK

Bishop Zubik will be at St. Scholastica's on Friday, February 15th at 7:00 p.m. to lead the Stations of the Cross. Please make plans to attend. Let us pray with the bishop and one another as we walk together on the road to Calvary where Christ died for our sins.

BULLETIN CONNECTION

Today's second reading, from St. Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians, sums up the core message of today's liturgy. Everything we are is because of Christ Jesus. We can't boast about ourselves; we can only boast about Jesus and what he has done. All three readings describe one paradox: The prophet Zephaniah writes of a remnant of people who remain faithful to the Lord. They are humble, lowly and honest. Jesus describes the people who will see God in the kingdom of heaven – poor in spirit, meek, merciful, clean of heart. Paul tells us that these humble, lowly people are God's choice. God chose the foolish to shame the wise, the weak to shame the strong and the "nobodies" to shame those who think they are "somebodies." When we scramble to better ourselves, reach the top, or grab it all, we're losers, not winners.

BLOOD DRIVE

Dr. Rueger and his family would like to thank all those who made the Blood Drive so successful, those who donated blood, those who came but were deferred, and those who couldn't come but gave another day. It was the best Blood Drive the parish has had. We collected 47 pints. We are very grateful to all who so generously responded to the Rueger family needs.

AQUINAS GUILD MEETING

The Guild's first meeting of the new year will be held on Tuesday, February 12, starting at noon in the Pastoral Center. A short business meeting and a light lunch will proceed their presentation. All women of the parish are invited to attend. We have sung and prayed these words since the beginning of Advent, so many weeks ago. Christ has come; he is our light. Ironically, sometimes it isn't darkness that needs to be overcome; sometimes competing lights can render a light source invisible. Just try to see stars in the night sky if you live in a well-lit city! Just try to see the light of Christ when there are such strong spotlights cast on some preachers and teachers. Paul writes about this problem in today's second reading, and he is describing the factions formed in the church of the first century! We still very much need his warning today. It is Jesus Christ we are to follow, not some media star or innovation or manipulation of the message. But perhaps we find his pure, simple message too difficult. It illuminates his Cross.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK

In recognition of Catholic Schools Week, please welcome students from our school, Christ the Divine Teacher Catholic Academy, as they are either readers, gift bearers or greeters today. It's clear from last week's Gospel and today's that doing God's will is what drives Jesus. We can watch from afar as he approaches John on the riverbank and submits to John's baptism. We can watch from afar in the coming weeks as the journey continues, as Jesus carries out the Father's will in each action he takes and choice he makes until, ultimately, he has given his whole life. We can watch from afar, but that really won't work. Paul makes it clear: We are called to do God's will. The whole story is really told in today's responsorial psalm. After waiting and waiting for God, we find he has stooped down to us. He has given us a new song, a new law. Old sacrifices won't do any longer. God wants something new from us. So we say. "Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will." John's baptism by water has ended. Now we are baptized by the Holy Spirit in Christ and called to do God's will.

DO YOU BELIEVE IN FAITH BASED EDUCATION?

Let us show you Christ the Divine Teacher Catholic Academy, the PreK-8 Parish School for St. Scholastica, St. Joseph, St. Edward and the Catholic Community of Sharpsburg. There were four Sundays of Advent before Christmas, and there have been four Sundays of Christmas since December 25. Once our local radio stations stop playing Christmas music and our stores put up their Valentine displays, it can be easy to miss the rest of Christmas. In the church, the season of Christmas ends today. We find ourselves back on the banks of the Jordan River where once we heard John the Baptist announce the Messiah's imminent arrival. Today the story comes full circle. A man arrives among the crowd John the Baptist always drew. He was different from the others who wanted John's baptism. John had no warnings for him, no call to repentance. This man had no need of this baptism by water, yet he told John that God demanded it. So John took Jesus into the river and pushed him under the water. With this final action from the old law the curtain was opened to the new. Here is God's Son. Salvation has come.

PGHFaith

Our Parish Group for Handing on the Faith will meet on Sunday January 27 at 10 a.m. in Marsico Library in the Pastoral Center. Our topic will be: "Promoting Life in an Election Year." Pope John Paul II called upon Catholics to promote a "culture of life." Our political choices can be an important part of this effort. This session intends to give us, as adult Catholics, a place to share our thoughts, our struggles, and our experiences as we try to make political choices that support a "culture of life."

PRE-MARRIAGE PROGRAM FOR THE ENGAGED Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008: St. Edward Church, Blawnox, 10:30 a.m. – 5:00 pm (including Mass). We use no last names. If you would like to pray, please write your name and address on paper and place the paper in the box. We will mail you a prayer list. We pray on our own time in our own homes at our own convenient times. We have no meetings. We just pray!

WE WILL HAVE A

COMMISSIONING SERVICE TODAY

All parishioners who have volunteered to serve our parish in our many ministries will be commissioned at all of the Masses this weekend. Approximately 300 parishioners volunteer their services in a variety of ways in our parish. We will give them a special blessing and commission them to go forward in bringing Christ to others. Some of these ministries are: altar servers, ushers, cantors, choir members, CCD catechists, parish school teachers, extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist, youth group leaders, parish council members, finance council members, lectors, Aquinas Guild officers, St. Vincent DePaul members, Respect Life Committee, bereavement committee, and many others.

You, the laity are empowered, by your baptism into the Church, the Body of Christ, to participate actively in the saving mission of the Church. This mandate, the authority to be leaders in the Church, is derived not from the hierarchy but from our baptismal anointing. This mandate has not fallen to the laity because there are insufficient numbers of clergy to fulfill these roles and responsibilities. Rather, the witness, service and preaching of the gospel by you, the laity are responsibilities that you inherently possess, and properly belong to you through the grace of baptism.

Therefore, today's feast of the Baptism of the Lord is not merely a remembrance of Jesus' baptism; it is also a reaffirmation of the baptism of every person. It is a reminder that the Holy Spirit is conferred in baptism, and from then onward, the baptized believer becomes a living sacrament – a sign to the world of God's power to create, to consecrate, to transform, to forgive, to save.

With this commissioning, we ask all of our parishioners to pray for our lay volunteers so that they may bring Christ to the people they serve through their specific ministry. And, we pray that every baptized Catholic will become a living sacrament to the people in their lives.

Saturday, Vigil of Baptism of the Lord, January 12

5:00 pm Elizabeth Greb (Lynch Family)

Sunday, Baptism of the Lord, January 13

7:30 am For the Parishioners of St. Scholastica Parish

9:00 am Dr. Mary Frances Ricketts

(The Ricketts Family)

11:00 am Lawrence & Madeline Yeasted (Family)

Monday, Weekday, January 14

8:30 am Eugene LeDonne (Turzai Family)

Tuesday, Weekday, January 15

8:30 am Craig Shondeck (Family)

Wednesday, Weekday, January 16

8:30 am Helen Ziegler (Family)

Thursday, St. Anthony, January 17

8:30 am Driscoll/Macino Families (Carl Macino)

Friday, Weekday, January 18

8:30 am Jim & Christine Cush (Dan Cush)

Saturday, Weekday, January 19

9:00 am Margaret L.
