VOTER REGISTRATION

Voter registration forms will be available at Church next Sunday for anyone who has moved, turned eighteen, or has not voted in two years. Absentee application forms will also be available.

LENTEN DAY OF REFLECTION

As we pass the halfway mark of the Lenten season, it's time to reflect on whether our Ash Wednesday "good intentions" have brought us closer to God. Each year the Aquinas Guild provides such an opportunity by sponsoring a parish Lenten Day of Reflection which will take place on Thursday, March 6. Conducting this year's retreat will be Father Richard L. Ragni who will speak on "Purification After Death." The day will begin with Mass at 11 a.m., followed by a light lunch and a reflection by Father Ragni. All men and women of the parish are invited to attend. GIRL SCOUT COOKIE SALE

Girl Scout Troop 844 (CDTCA Junior Girl Scouts) and Troop 194 (CDTCA Brownies) will be selling Girl Scout Cookies after all weekend Masses on March 1st and 2nd and March 8th and 9th. The cost per box is $3.50. If you have already purchased Girl Scout Cookies or you are not interested in purchasing cookies for yourself, you may also support the Girl Scout's service project of sending cookies to our Troops serving in the military. Over 27,000 boxes of cookies were shipped to U.S. Troops last year. Help the Girl Scouts break this record

Mark your calendars for our Second Annual Family Fun Run/Walk at Hartwood acres. Pets and strollers welcome! All proceeds benefit our mission trip to Appalachia.

FAITH HEROES: VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

JUNE 16-20^TH~9:00-12:00

This is for youth ages 5-9. 10 year olds are welcome as Jr. counselors. Senior high students as counselors. This year, each day we will explore 2 different heroes of our faith: 1 man and 1 women. As usual the week will be loaded with fun and games, as well as faith. If registered by May 1, Cost is $15.00 per child. $25.00 for 2 Children, $5.00 for each additional child thereafter. BULLETIN CONNECTION

If a desert town is lucky enough to have a well, as the town of Sychar did, that well is a hub of activity where people can meet, catch up on news and even gossip. Except at noon – no one goes out at noon in the desert. The Samaritan woman who arrived then must have been dismayed to see Jesus at the well. If she came to draw water at noon she did it to avoid the other women, and after we hear her story of five husbands and a live-in lover, we understand why.

What an unlikely evangelist she was! Jesus amazes her by saying he has water that can slack her thirst forever. He tells her he knows all her secrets. Bud did she run from him or keep her visit a secret? No. She ran to the people she had been avoiding and told them all about Jesus. They came to believe, first, because of her; then, as with all good evangelizers, their faith went beyond her. They came to believe in Jesus because they heard him for themselves. Who first led you to learn about Jesus? Why do you follow him now?

ST. BONAVENTURE BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY is offering a seven-week grief support group this Spring. We invite anyone who is grieving the death of a loved one to join us for this free series of meetings. An evening Grief Support Group will be held at 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. beginning Wednesday, March 5, 2008 to Wednesday, April 16, 2008. ADULT EDUCATION NOTES

Popular culture is our theme for the week as we welcome Rob Owen, TV critic for the Post-Gazette, to St. Scholastica for "Catholic Conversations" this Wednesday evening, February 27, from 7:30 to 9:00 in the Pastoral Center. PGHFaith has a similar topic this weekend, "Finding Inspiration in Popular Culture." We will meet this Sunday morning at 10 a.m. in Marsico Library. Bring along an example of pop culture (on CD or cassette, videotape or DVD) that inspires you!

A limited number of copies of "Lenten Stories from John's Gospel," a Catholic Update article by the late Fr. Raymond Brown, are available at the entrances to the church. The article provides rich reflections on the Gospels for the 3^rd, 4^th, and 5^th Sundays of Lent.

LENTEN FAMILY GATHERING

The Education Committee is sponsoring a Lenten Family Gathering on Sunday, March 2, from 5 to 7:30 in the school cafeteria. We will share a potluck meal of soups, salads, and breads. There will be a family activity assembling sacrifice beads to help us all, old and young, to focus our spiritual efforts this Lent. The children will undertake another activity while adults have some time to reflect together on our family Lenten practices and on how to present the story of the Lord's Passion to our children as they grow. There is a signup for the Gathering in the back of the church. Please sign up this weekend if you would like to take part or contact Mary Ellen Maher at 412-767-5863 as soon as possible so we know how many to expect. In addition to your contribution to the potluck meal, each family is asked to bring along a bag of Easter candy for the poor. All parishioners are welcome at this event—we are, after all, a parish family!

NEW PARISHIONER WELCOME

Please join us in the Pastoral Center next Sunday to welcome new members who have joined the parish over the last few months. The open house and breakfast buffet will be after the 9am and 11am Masses. All parishioners are invited to attend.

GUILD MEETING RESCHEDULED

Bad weather caused the cancellation of last week's Aquinas Guild meeting but it has been rescheduled for this Tuesday, February 19, 2008, starting at noon. Guest speakers Judi Owen and Bernadette West will take members on a culinary tour of Tuscany. They will relate their recent experiences at a cooking school and share slides of their travels in the scenic Italian countryside. The presentation will be preceded by a brief business meeting and a light lunch. If you would like to attend, we would appreciate a phone call so that we can insure sufficient food. TV FROM A FAITH PERSPECTIVE

Are there lessons in living to be learned from The Sopranos? Was a 2004 book on target when it held up Buffy the Vampire Slayer as a spiritual guide? What do the stories that appeal to us on television tell us about ourselves and our vision of the world? These are some of the questions that might arise in our next session of "Catholic Conversations" as we welcome Rob Owen, TV critic for the Post-Gazette, to St. Scholastica. We will talk with Mr. Owen on Wednesday evening, February 27, from 7:30 to 9:00 in the Pastoral Center. "Catholic Conversations" aims at informative, engaging, and participatory talk. The session will begin as an interview and develop (we hope) into something more like a conversation. Those who attend will be invited to take part. There is no fee or registration.

FINDING INSPIRATION IN

POPULAR CULTURE

Popular culture in all its forms is an important part of our lives. But how does our faith relate to the music we listen to, and the TV shows and movies that we watch? Our Parish Group for Handing on the Faith's February topic is "Finding Inspiration in Popular Culture." We will consider pop culture productions that have inspired us, and talk about using them to pass the faith on to others. Feel free to bring along a sample on cassette or videotape or CD or DVD. Please note that, in addition to our regular Sunday morning meeting on February 24 at 10 a.m. in Marsico Library, we are adding another PGHFaith session on the same topic the previous Thursday evening, February 21, at 7:30 p.m., also in Marsico Library. Also note that the time of the February 21 session is a change from the notice in last week's bulletin. Any interested adult or older teen is welcome to either session.

SACRAMENTS

INFANT BAPTISM is celebrated at noon on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month. Please make arrangements with the parish secretary at least 2 weeks prior to the desired date.

ADULT BAPTISM The R.C.I.A. program sees to the needs of adults who wish to become Catholic. Call the pastor for information.

RECONCILIATION (CONFESSION) is celebrated on Saturday, after 9:00 a.m. Mass and after Saturday evening Mass, and also by appointment.

EUCHARISTIC LITURGY SCHEDULE:

Weekday Masses: Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m.

Saturday Morning - 9:00 a.m.

Weekend Masses: Saturday Evening 5:00 p.m.

HOLY EUCHARIST is available for those who are sick and confined to home. Call the parish office and we will bring the Eucharist to you.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK is available for those who are chronically or seriously ill. Call the parish office. A service for Anointing of the Sick will be conducted annually.

MARRIAGE Anyone who wishes to marry should contact the pastor at least six months prior to the desired date. Anyone who is married in a civil ceremony and wishes to sacramentalize the marriage should contact the pastor. Anyone planning to celebrate their 25th or 50th anniversary should contact the parish office well in advance of the desired date.

HOLY ORDERS Please call the pastor if you feel you might be called to the priesthood or the diaconate.

FEBRUARY 15^TH STATIONS OF THE CROSS WITH BISHOP ZUBIK

Bishop Zubik will be at St. Scholastica's on Friday, February 15^th at 7:00 p.m. to lead the Stations of the Cross. Please make plans to attend. Let us pray with the bishop and one another as we walk together on the road to Calvary where Christ died for our sins.

LENTEN FAMILY GATHERING

Christ the Divine Teacher Catholic Academy is pleased to announce the 5th Annual "Casino Night at the Races" Saturday, March 1. BULLETIN CONNECTION

Temptation is a universal human experience. As proof that there is no sin in being tempted, we see Jesus himself tempted by the devil in today's Gospel passage. As proof that the devil knows every angle to use to tempt each human being, we see in the first reading and the Gospel the clever ways the devil used to tempt both the woman, Eve, and Jesus by appealing to what was most important to them. Sin, of course, occurs when we succumb to the appealing temptations put before us. Don't be too hard on Eve unless you are sure you would have fared any better in her place! Sin entered the world through the woman and her husband, not because they invited it in, but because they couldn't withstand the temptation to "be like gods who know what is good and what is evil." And don't be too dismissive of Jesus, thinking that perhaps his three temptations were easy to resist because, after all, he is God. Jesus certainly is fully God; equally certain Jesus is fully human. No temptation we endure was beyond him. He knows the power of the evil one trying to get us to turn away from God. As we begin Lent, what better role model and champion could we have to help us overcome our own temptations?

ST. MARGARET HOSPITAL

Because the number of Catholic patients in St. Margaret Hospital continues to increase, there is a need for additional volunteers to help bring Holy Communion to them. If you are interested in knowing more about this important ministry of the Church, call Sister Marilyn at 412-781-0186 ext. 22.

AQUINAS GUILD MEETING

The Guild's first meeting of the new year will be held on Tuesday, February 12, starting at noon in the Pastoral Center. Sharing their recent experience in Italy, our guest speakers, Bernadette West and Judi Owen, will take us on a culinary tour of Tuscany. A short business meeting and a light lunch will proceed their presentation. All women of the parish are invited to attend. YOUTH HAPPENINGS!

INTERSECTION Sunday March 17 at the Ministry Center from 10-11. All teens are welcome to join us for great discussion and a light breakfast. (A leadership team meeting will follow). 

  MARCH 1 IS THE DEADLINE FOR REGISTERING FOR THE APPALACHIA MISSION TRIP. Our next meeting is March 1 in the pastoral center after the evening mass.  Our trip is scheduled for the week of June 22.

MARCH FOR LIFE

On January 22 the St. Scholastic bus journeyed to Washington for the MARCH FOR LIFE.  We had a great trip, 45 riders (25 students).  We attended the Youth Rally with Archbishop Wuerl and Bishop Zubik and then headed for the Rally and March.  We had a chance to attend a meeting with Senators Casey and Specter before we headed home.  A beautiful rainbow, as we were leaving Washington, reminded us how blessed we were.  Thank you to all our wonderful friends who made the trip possible by supporting the pancake breakfast, sponsoring a rider or donating money for the bus.  May God send His blessing to all who helped.

FOR YOUR MARRIAGE

February 10 is World Marriage Day. One new resource that may be helpful for married couples is "For Your Marriage," a website that has been set up by the United States Catholic bishops. It can be found at www.foryourmarriage.org. The website includes daily marriage tips, articles on issues that face couples, and discussions of Catholic teaching on marriage.

 

 FAITH AND POPULAR CULTURE

Popular culture in all its forms is an important part of our lives. But how does our faith relate to the music we listen to, and the TV shows and movies that we watch? Our Parish Group for Handing on the Faith's February topic is "Finding Inspiration in Popular Culture." We will consider pop culture productions that have inspired us, and talk about using them to pass the faith on to others. Please note that, in addition to our regular Sunday morning meeting on February 24 at 10 a.m. in Marsico Library, we are adding another PGHFaith session the previous Thursday afternoon, February 21, at 1:30 p.m. also in Marsico Library. It will be on the same topic. In addition, our February guest for "Catholic Conversations" is Rob Owen, the TV critic for the Post-Gazette. We will talk with Mr. Owen on Wednesday evening, February 27, from 7:30 to 9:00 in the Pastoral Center about faith and television. Any interested adult or older teen is welcome to PGHFaith and "Catholic Conversations."
