Today's liturgy has that tone. The disciples have seen Jesus die, rise from the dead, promise he'd always be with them and then disappear into the sky. Today's first reading reveals a subdued group of men and women regrouping back in Jerusalem. Since we know what comes next, we may think we know the answer to their "now what?" The Holy Spirit will descend on them at Pentecost and their mission will begin. But the second reading and the Gospel remind us that we don't know that answer for ourselves. Not yet. Peter promises that we will suffer, but we don't know the details yet. Jesus prays all those centuries ago, not only for the disciples there with him at the time, but for all of us, for everything that will befall us and become of us. All three readings raise questions and portend danger. Only the responsorial psalm offers an answer: "The Lord is my life's refuge; of whom shall I be afraid?"

MAY SHE REST IN PEACE

Please pray for Anna Marie Larkin who died this past week and was given Christian burial from our parish. As all of us who live the Christian life know, faith in Christ leads to a whole new way of being. Faith in Christ first of all leads to love for him. Love for Christ, he assures us today, must lead to life in him, and life in Christ is a moral life, a life obedient to his commandments. If we love him we will do more than speak of that love. We will keep his commandments. This is the measure that will be used to show that we believe in Christ and love him. This is how we follow him. Keep his commandments. They are not mere laws, rules to be memorized, commands to stifle us or trip us up. The commandments are a Way of Life, a gift that gives us true freedom.

MAY HE REST IN PEACE

Please pray for James Pieper who died this past week and was given Christian burial from our Church. We know we could each substitute our own names for Philip's and hear Jesus saying this to us! We can all identify with both Philip and Thomas today, for they are both befuddled by what Jesus has said to them. Their questions are poignant, too: "Where are you going? Show us what you mean." You'll notice that Jesus doesn't answer his disciples' questions very clearly or offer point-by-point explanations. This passage begins with his statement, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me." Right after this, both Thomas and Philip ask troubled questions. Jesus replies with the same admonition he started with: "Have faith. Believe in me." Our troubled questions arise the same way as the questions in this passage. We think we need more information, a better map for the journey, a better definition of God. Jesus answers simply: "Believe in me."

VOICES FROM SCRIPTURE:

THE PROPHET AMOS

A solitary stranger interrupts a solemn religious service at the royal temple in Bethel during the reign of King Jeroboam of Israel. Join us this Sunday, April 20 at 10 a.m. in Marsico Library as we look at what we know of Amos and his message, a message that is as pointed for us as it was for the scandalized people at the service in Bethel long ago. Jesus is speaking in metaphors and Peter is speaking about direct action, and they both have the same message: Salvation comes only through baptism in Jesus Christ. Jesus describes himself as both the shepherd who calls and leads and cares for his sheep, and as the gate through which the sheep enter to be saved. Three weeks ago, at the Easter Vigil, thousands of people all over the world were baptized, confirmed and called to the table of the Lord. Thousands more renewed the promises they had made at their own baptisms. These weren't events for that single day. Perhaps the excitement has waned and the newness worn off, but the church proclaims the message as urgently as she did before Easter. We are saved by baptism in Christ Jesus.

YOUTH HAPPENINGS

A big THANK YOU to all who contributed to this summer's mission trip to Appalachia.Your generosity is greatly appreciated. The guest for our next session is Bill Deasy, a Pittsburgh-based singer, songwriter, and novelist. Bill was lead vocalist for The Gathering Field in the 1990s before launching a solo career. He is now beginning a new collaboration called Thomas Jefferson's Aeroplane. Some of his songs address spiritual themes such as embracing life, the possibility of redemption, and how easy it is to put redemption off. We will talk with Bill about his music and its meaning on Thurs. evening, May 1, at 8:00 p.m. (following evening Mass for Ascension Thursday) in the Pastoral Center. Adults and older teens are welcome to attend. There is no fee or registration.

VOICES FROM SCRIPTURE:

THE PROPHET AMOS

Many ancient Near Eastern societies had wise people who upheld the traditions of the nation in their temples or royal courts. Only in Israel, however, did prophets arise who were bold enough to challenge the religious and political life of the people in the name of God. Amos is the first of these prophets whose words have come down to us recorded in a book. Join us on Sunday, April 20, or on Wednesday, April 23, at 10 a.m. in Marsico Library as we look at Amos and his message, and find that his words have lost little of their power or relevance.

WE NEED YOUR HELP

THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY RESPONDED. Adult chaperones and teen volunteers are also needed.

BULLETIN CONNECTION

There's something very enjoyable about the little drama described in today's Gospel. Two disciples, walking to a village seven miles from Jerusalem, meet Jesus but don't recognize him. Ironically, they are talking about him and all the things that have happened – his arrest and trial, his death, his now missing body. The events are so vivid to them that they can't believe everyone hasn't heard about them. We might expect that they would recognize that their traveling companion was Jesus when he started interpreting the Scriptures to them. Certainly his teaching set their hearts on fire. Certainly it led them to ask him to stay with them. But it was only in the breaking of bread that their eyes were opened and he was made known to them. It is the same for us. We can learn all about Jesus and study the Scriptures, but he will only really be known t us in the breaking of the bread, in the Eucharist.

VOICES FROM SCRIPTURE:

THE PROPHET AMOS

A solitary stranger interrupts a solemn religious service at the royal temple in Bethel during the reign of King Jeroboam of Israel. The intruder proclaims that the service itself is worthless; it only angers God rather than pleasing Him. God wants something else. Some incident like this may lie behind the book of Amos. Join us on Sun., April 20, or on Wed., April 23, at 10 a.m. in Marsico Library as we look at what we know of Amos and his message, a message that is as pointed for us as it was for the scandalized people at the service in Bethel long ago.

INTRODUCTION TO CENTERING PRAYER WORKSHOP

Those of us leading busy lives often long to find a way for God to lead us beyond anxiety into inner stillness and peace where we hear with the "ear of the heart." Join us on Saturday, April 19, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., as Sacred Heart Church, 310 Shady Avenue, hosts an Introduction to Centering Prayer sponsored by Contemplative Outreach Pittsburgh. Centering Prayer is a way of cultivating a deeper relationship with God. It is a resting in God beyond thoughts, words, and emotions. The workshop's cost, $30.00, includes materials, snacks and six optional follow-up sessions (Thursdays, 7:30-9:00 p.m.). Scholarships are available. For registration or information, contact Betty Hanigan at 412~576~7409, or 661~0187 x 119 or echanigan@aol.com.

WE NEED YOUR HELP

Each week we send out the bulletin via e-mail to those who requested this service.
