Today's readings bring us face to face with our choice: Moses tells us we can choose a blessing or a curse, simply by choosing to obey or to disobey God's law. Jesus tells us we can choose a sturdy house built on a rock or a ruined house built on sand, simply by hearing and acting on his words or by failing to act on them. This is the season of discipleship. We have each been chosen by Jesus, as personally as any apostle was ever chosen. We have celebrated our call in the preceding season. Now it is time to live that call.

WELCOME AND CONGRATULATIONS TO:

Dominico, Henry and Indigo Parente, children of David and Hope McCluskey Parente, Atia Rae DiGoia, daughter of Matthew and Tina Mascaro DiGoia, Who were initiated into the Church through the holy waters of baptism.

SPRING FLING

The Sisters of St. Francis of the Providence of God would like to invite your parishioners to our 4th Annual Spring Fling. There was a time in church history when awe of the Eucharist turned to fear, and people rarely received holy Communion. Today, perhaps, is the polar opposite of that earlier time. We sometimes need to heighten our reverence and awe with regard to the Eucharist. This includes reviewing how we behave during Mass, and how we approach to receive holy Communion.

There was another time, referred to in today's second reading from 1 Corinthians, when people abused the Eucharist, not by lack of reference for the sacrament, but by lack of reverence for each other. A meal accompanied the celebration at that time, and rich people were eating well while others went hungry. We too, need to remember Paul's admonition -we are all one body, the body of Christ.

CHILDREN'S LITURGY OF THE WORD

This is the last Sunday this spring for the Children's Liturgy of the Word at the 9 a.m. Mass; it will resume in the fall. Judy Granato, who has led the Children's Liturgy from its beginning, is handing over administrative responsibilities to Natalie Gillespie. Judy has truly been a good shepherd for this ministry, and we are grateful for her years of faithful service. Thanks also to Natalie for taking on her new duties. Judy and Natalie will both continue as adult leaders. We are also grateful to the other adult leaders for 2007-2008: Mary Jo Dunlap, Maribeth Donnelly, Sue Goodwin, Jennifer Perkins, and Andrew Bechman. Finally, we are grateful for the presence of the parish children, who have been well-behaved, receptive, and eager to participate during the Children's Liturgy. It is a great privilege to share the Word of God with them.

READINGS FOR THE WEEK OF MAY 25
<DIR>
Sunday: Dt 8:2-3,14b-16a/1 Cor 10:16-17/Jn 6:51-58

Monday: 1 Pt 1:3-9/Mk 10:17-27

Tuesday: 1 Pt 1:10-16/Mk 10:28-31

Wed.: 1 Pt 1:18-25/Mk 10:32-45

Thursday: 1 Pt 2:2-5,9-12/Mk 10:46-52

Friday: Dt 7:6-11/1 Jn 4:7-16/Mt 11:25-30

Saturday: Zep 3:14-18a or Rom 12:9-16/Lk 1:39-56

Next Sun.: Dt 11:18,26-28,32/Rom 3:21-25,28/

Mt 7:21-27

WANNA HAVE SOME FUN???

On Saturday May 31 all teens are invited to experience dragon boating. Youth must register for Camp Helping Hand by June 21.

Forms for both programs are available at the church entrances or you may contact the youth ministry office.

BULLETIN CONNECTION

One God. Three Persons. That's the doctrine. Scholars try to wrap their minds around it. Skeptics try to debunk it. Preachers sometimes try to explain it with illustrations of shamrocks or triangles. Today's liturgy does none of those things. Today the church celebrates God, who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Today we rejoice that such an amazing God loves us. We believe in the God "who is, who was and who is to come." We marvel that such a God wants us to be sons and daughters. The Trinity truly is a mystery, in the religious sense of the word. It is not a puzzle to be solved; rather, it is a truth to be embraced in faith.

LITURGICAL AND SCRIPTURAL BEARINGS:

Zooming In and Zooming Out on the Gospels: What Lens Are You Using? Lectio Divina

There is an ancient form of monastic prayer known as Lectio divina, or "holy reading," in which one takes a small piece of Scripture and prays it intensely. To describe it simply, there are four stages to this prayer:

LECTIO: The passage is read multiple times in a very slow and prayerful fashion, with periods of silence in between. One examines the sacred Scriptures so closely as to gaze upon single words.

MEDITATIO: This is when one tries to be open to the Spirit, listening attentively, and praying with that single word or phrase. It is sometimes referred to as "ruminating." As a cow chews on its cud, so we chew on the word of God, and finally find a way to absorb it more deeply and digest it. One may spend days or weeks praying with a single passage.

ORATIO: This refers to a conversational prayer, when we open ourselves up in dialogue with God. It is also a consecrated prayer, as we allow God to enter into our lives and places we have not shared with him before. We ask him to make us whole and holy.

CONTEMPLATIO: This is perhaps the hardest phase of the whole Lectio process, for it is when we quit trying to talk and fill ourselves with words; we still ourselves and simply rest in God. I liken it much to Romans 8:26-27, which says, "In the same way, the spirit too comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit itself intercedes with inexpressible groanings. And the one who searches hearts knows what is the intention of the Spirit, because it intercedes for the holy ones according to God's will."

WELCOME AND CONGRATULATIONS TO:

Lily Quinn McLaughlin, daughter of Timothy and Regina Russell McLaughlin, who was initiated into the Church through the holy waters of baptism.

GENESIS COLLECTION

Thank you to everyone who supported the collection for Genesis last Sunday.
