EXIT 12 IS NOW OPEN!

When we sent out the invitations to Father's retirement dinner, we enclosed directions to the Syria Shrine from Freeport Road since Exit 12 on Route 28 was closed at the time of the mailing. Here are the updated directions.

From Route 28 North bound: Take the Sprindale exit (#12) and turn left onto Hyte Road, follow to the end and turn left onto Russleton Road, the Syria Shrine is one half mile on the left. From Route 28 South bound: Take the Sprindale exit (#12) and turn right onto Hyte Road, follow to the end and turn left onto Russleton Road, the Syria Shrine is one half mile on the left.

From St. Scholastica Church: Go toward Cheswick and Springdale on Freeport Road. At the first red light past the PA Turnpike turn left onto Pearl Street. Go to the top of the hill and the Syria Shriners is on the right.

CAMP HELPING HAND

BLOOD DRIVE

The next Parish Blood Drive is Sunday, July 20, 8am to 1pm. Traditionally there are fewer donors in the Summer and a greater need for blood due to more sport activities. BULLETIN CONNECTION

In these weeks of readings that focus on discipleship – pointing out the rewards, challenges and dangers of being a disciple of the Lord – how perfect to honor the two disciples who did the most to form and direct the early church. The readings we are given for the vigil of this feast and for the day itself offer vivid pictures of both Peter and Paul – living through danger, preaching the good news, proclaiming their faith in Jesus Christ. These men are two of the greatest heroes we can hold up as models of discipleship for ourselves and for our children. There are those who would dismiss them as relics from our past, but they are relevant heroes – when you take your own discipleship seriously you will know that. Their challenges then are our challenges now.

GOLDEN WEDDING CELEBRATION

The Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh is again planning its annual Golden Wedding Celebration for the couples who have been married for 50 years. This year's celebration will take place on Sunday, October 12, 2008, beginning with a Mass at 3:00 p.m. at St. Paul Cathedral. Bishop Zubik will be the celebrant. A reception will follow in the lower hall at the Cathedral.

If you are a parishioner celebrating your 50^th wedding anniversary in 2008, and would be interested in attending the celebration along with the other jubilarian couples, please call the rectory or drop a note in the weekly collection basket no later than July 27, 2008. Invitations will be sent out after responses have been received.

BULLETIN CONNECTION

Danger enters our picture of discipleship today. We are God's chosen flock, his beloved children, yet there is a shadow side. Jesus our brother showed us how to be disciples, including how to carry a cross and die on it. Today's first reading and responsorial psalm are dark and forbidding at first, but each one ends with a song of praise and hope in the Lord. In the second reading, St. Paul reminds us that Jesus' power over sin and death are given to everyone. The most reassuring words of all come from Jesus in today's Gospel reading. He doesn't promise that we won't be harmed, but he tells us we have nothing to fear. The God who notes the fall of every sparrow and counts the hairs on our heads will be with us through it all.

ADULT SERIES

In May, Suzie McConnell-Serio was the final speaker at the Diocesan Adult Education Lectures. The DVD of her talk will be shown in the Pastoral Center Library on Thursday, June 26th at 9:15am. Suzie McConnell-Serio has twice won Olympic medals as part of the 1988 and 1992 U.S. Olympic women's basketball team. She presently coaches the Duquesne University Womens Basketball Team. Her Lecture is about "how Christ forms us through our everyday responsibilities."

C.C. BOYS BASKETBALL CAMP

Applications are now being accepted for the C.C. Basketball camp to be held this summer in the Central Catholic High School gym. The camp, now in its thirty-first year of operation, has two separate sessions for boys entering grades 4-9.

BULLETIN CONNECTION

Here is an amazing statement: We are God's people, the sheep of his flock. To our ancestors in the desert God said, "You shall be my special possession, dearer to me than all other people." God speaks those words to us now. Really. We can hug those words to ourselves and know we are loved.

In an earlier Gospel passage, we heard Jesus call his apostles, choosing them to be his special friends, to follow him, to come and see where he lived. Perhaps they had some time to hug his call to themselves and feel special. However, in today's Gospel they found out what their call involved – they were given authority; they were given orders. Finally, they were given the bottom line: You got everything from God as a free gift. Now you are to give everything you can without expecting anything in return.

SCRIPTURE: CHARTING THE WAY

In Matthew's setting of the context for the mission of the Twelve, images of lost sheep and fields in need of harvesting are drawn upon. Herds of sheep and harvesting fields were part of the landscape of first-century Jews living in Palestine. Jesus uses these images for the Twelve as a means of communicating the enormity of the task of preaching the kingdom of heaven and healing the sick, the dying and the unclean. These images were helpful for Jesus' Jewish followers to better embrace Jesus' call to evangelization and discipleship.

In the first reading from Exodus, we hear how Moses and ancient Israel were challenged by God to "hearken my voice and keep my covenant." Over time, Israel would learn that listening to Gods' voice and living out their covenantal bond would be the key to building Israel into "a holy nation." God reminded the Israelites in the desert to draw upon their experiences of God for comfort and strength: "You have seen for yourselves how I treated the Egyptians and how I bore you up on eagle wings and brought you here to myself" (19:4).

Like the ancient Israelites, we Christians can draw upon our experiences of Jesus for comfort and strength. The mission of discipleship today still includes the primary task of preaching and healing. We too, as contemporary Christians, have an enormous task in front of us. We draw comfort and strength from knowing that Jesus empowers us today for this task just as he did with his original Twelve Apostles.

YOUTH INFORMATION

Register your 10-14 year old for CAMP HELPING HAND this summer. This mini camp is a great way to give you children the chance to serve others. July 1, 2, and 3 from 9-2. FEAST DAY OF ST. ANTHONY

On June 11^th, St. Anthony Chapel on Harpster Street in Troy Hill will begin a Triduum (3 Days) of prayer with Mass & Novena for the intercession of St. Anthony. On Friday, June 13^th, the Feast Day of St. Anthony, Masses will be held at 8:30 am, 11:00 am, and 7:00 pm. On Wednesday, June 11^th, Mass will be held at 8:30 am & 7:00 pm. BULLETIN CONNECTION

What does God want? From ancient times people have tried to find out. Bargains have been struck with God; offers have been made and so have demands. Has anyone really wanted to know what God wants, or are we really asking what we have to do to get God to give us what we want?

In today's readings we have poignant words from God. Through Hosea God says, "It is love that I desire, not sacrifice." In Matthew's Gospel Jesus says, "I desire mercy, not sacrifice." Both passages ask us to be honest – there's nothing we can really offer that will "buy" us what we want from God. The prayers we say, offerings we make, rules we keep don't require that God give us anything in exchange. God wants to give us what we need – freedom and healing from our sins.

SACRAMENTAL DIMENSIONS OF CULTURAL PRACTICE

Many Hispanic wedding ceremonies feature the lazo, or lasso, and the giving of the arras, a small box containing 13 gold coins.

The lazo appears variously as a rope, a ribbon or a double rosary and is usually placed around the shoulders of the couple during the ceremony in order to symbolize the love that binds them together. According to CatholicBrides.com, the lazo as a wedding rosary – made up of two individual rosaries joined into one – is meant to "symbolize the unification of the couple through prayer. The traditional belief is if the couple prays the rosary every night their marriage will endure."

The 13 coins of the arras represent Christ and his 12 apostles. Usually the groom gives the box and coins to his bride during the ceremony to show that he has pledged to provide financial support for her in their new life. The bride promises to use the money wisely. "In these more modern times of two people often contributing financially to the household this custom still reflects the religious intent of a united couple managing finances through prayer."

With the large population of Latino people in all areas of the United States, the Quinceañera celebration for young women coming of age and being recognized as adults in the community is common almost everywhere. Many cultures and religious mark these rites of passage as a way of celebrating the importance of young people to the future of the community.

Until recently, there has lacked a formal ritual for Quinceañeras for those within the U.S. Roman Catholic church; priests and deacons have been left to adapt liturgies to the needs of the celebration. On August 7, 2007, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a formal ritual, approved by the Vatican, to be used in the context of eucharistic liturgies, with adaptations for Liturgies of the Word.
