YEAR ROUND FUNDRAISER FOR

CHRIST THE DIVINE TEACHER CATHOLIC ACADEMY

Please help us earn free equipment and supplies through our year long fundraiser for Christ the Divine Teacher Catholic Academy.  Clip UPC's from Campbells, Pepperidge Farms, Swanson and Market Day products.  Save the lids from Prego and V-8 juices.  Drop off the UPC's and lids in the collection bin at the rear of the church.  We earn points toward merchandise from Campbell's Labels for Education catalog.  Thank you!

SECOND COLLECTION

There will be a second collection following all the Masses this weekend in support of Birthright. Birthright is a pregnancy support center that helps girls and women encountering unexpected pregnancies by providing alternatives to abortion. Please keep the unborn in your hearts and prayers.

YOUTH INFORMATION!

The annual diocesan Gateway Clipper cruise is November 2.  Any high school youth wishing to attend should RSVP by Sept. 6.  Cost is $25.00 per person which includes the dinner/dance.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

There will be a meeting for all confirmation candidates and their parents after the 11:00 Mass on Sunday September 14th in the pastoral center.  Confirmation will be in late April or early May.

  September 21 is Catechetical Sunday.  All religious education classes will begin that week.  If you have not yet registered you can visit www.saintscholastica.com for an enrollment form.

CHILDREN'S LITURGY OF THE WORD

The Children's Liturgy of the Word resumes next Sunday, September 7, at the 9:00 Mass. This is a celebration of the Liturgy of the Word designed especially for children in pre-kindergarten through the fourth grade. We ask that the children who are sent to the Children's Liturgy be comfortable leaving their parents and that they be able to sit reasonably still and attend to the service. Snacks and toys should be left behind because they distract the other children. Parents are welcome to accompany their children if they wish.  Adults wishing to serve as leaders should contact Natalie Gillespie (412/782-3943). 

Please note that the Children's Liturgy will begin differently this year. Prior to the first reading, Father Ken will invite the children to come to the front of the church for a blessing before they proceed to the Pastoral Center.  As in the past, they will return to the church during the offering.

MINISTRY OF PRAISE

In preparation for a new prayer list, we are inviting all parishioners to place their petitions for prayers in the "Ministry of Praise" boxes in the vestibules of the church. We use no last names. If you would like to pray, please write your name and address on paper and place the paper in the box. We will mail you a prayer list. We pray on our own time in our own homes at our own convenient times. We have no meetings. We just pray!

WELCOME!

I am pleased to announce that Patricia Wolfson is our new parish secretary. She will be working the following hours: Monday – Friday, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. If you have parish business, please contact Pat during these hours.

The Parish Office is still located in the Rectory, but within the next week or so, the Parish Office will be moved into the space currently occupied by the Parish Library in the Pastorial Center. The library will be moved into the Ministry Center to be used by parishioners and catechists for our Religious Education Program. Fr. Ken.

YOUTH INFORMATION!

Religious Education:

The St. Scholastica Parish picnic will be at Squaw Valley Park on Sunday, August 24^th from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The schedule for the picnic will be as follows: 3:00 pm Kids Games, 4:00 pm Parish Game, 4:30 pm Dinner, 5:30 pm Bingo and Moon Bounce from 3:00-7:00 pm. Chicken, hot dogs, corn and beverages will be provided. The cost of the picnic will be $5.00 per person with a maximum charge of $20.00 per family.

There will also be a "Super 50/50" drawing. After the 1^st prize winner is drawn, we will also be pulling additional winners that will win prizes that have been donated by local businesses. Prizes for bingo have also been donated. COMING THIS FALL! WOMEN'S CATHOLIC SCRIPTURE STUDY

This is an in-depth study of EXODUS that will run September through May on Tuesdays from 1 to 3 p.m .(We will follow the Fox Chapel Area School District calendar.) The first class is Tuesday, September 9, from 1 to 3 pm in the St., Scholastica Parish Hall. The registration free is $50 and covers all materials needed for the 30 week course. CONGRATULATIONS!

Michael Ackerman, lifelong parishioner at St. Scholastica, has recently been accepted to St. Paul's Seminary in Crafton. Michael attended St. Scholastica elementary school and North Catholic High School before entering Duquesne University in 2002. He graduated with a degree in history and business and worked in Duquesne's admissions office from 2005 until 2007 as the Assistant Director of Admissions. Michael also attended Duquesne's Graduate School of Education having graduated in 2007 with a M.S. Ed. and taught high school at Riverview High School in Oakmont this past school year. Michael credits his family, his parish family at St. Scholastica, his altar serving experience, and past pastors for helping foster his vocation. Please keep him and all seminarians in your prayers and remember to encourage vocations in your own families.

PILGRIMAGE TO THE BASCILICA THE SHRINE OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION IN DC ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 27^TH, 2008.

The theme will reflect our diocesan observance of the Year of Saint Paul and our parish adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. We are trying to see if there is enough interest for our Parish to reserve a bus for the day. The cost will be $50.00 per person and would include a boxed meal and drink per each person during the trip home. If we do not have enough people, perhaps we can share a bus with a neighboring Parish.

THREE YEARS OF POPES

Dear friends, I am offering 3 free presentation on "1978 – The Year 3 Popes" at the John Paul I Pastoral Center, 9^th and Clay Streets, Sharpsburg (across the street from Madonna of Jerusalem Church). August 21 (Pope Paul VI); and October 23 (Pope John Paul II). 7:30 to 9:00 p.m.

Thirty years ago the Catholic Church witnessed the death of Pope Paul VI, the election of Pope John Paul I, 33 short days later his sudden death, and then the shocking election of Pope John Paul II, the first non-Italian pope in 455 years. Father Frank Almade, administrator of the Catholic Community in Sharpsburg, is offering three presentation of these Church leaders. Thursday, Aug. 21, on Pope Paul VI: Shepherd of Vatican II; Thursday, Sept. 25, on Pope John Paul I: The Smiling Pope; and Thursday, Oct. 23, on Pope John Paul II: Visitor from the East. ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY~HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION

Friday, August 15^th is a Holy Day of Obligation. Mass will be celebrated here at St. Scholastica on Friday the 15^th at 8:30 a.m., Noon, and 7:00 p.m. Our neighboring communities will be celebrating Mass as follows:

St. Edward Parish in Blawnox at 9:00 a.m. and Noon

St. Joseph Parish in O'Hara there will be a Vigil Mass on Thursday the 14^th at 7:00 p.m. then on Friday the 15^th at 9:00 a.m.

Catholic Community of Sharpsburg: St. Mary will have a Vigil Mass on Thursday the 14^th 4:00 p.m.; On Friday the 15^th, Masses will be held at Madonna at 7:30 a.m., St. Mary at Noon and 7:00 p.m. at Madonna.

DON'T FORGET!

The St. Scholastica Parish Picnic will be at Squaw Valley Park on Sunday, August 24th from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Sign-up sheets are in the vestibule for attendance, side dishes and volunteer opportunities.   Please take the time to sign up so we can estimate how much food to order.  Your help with the volunteer activities (clean up, set up, bingo, etc.) is also very much appreciated.  The schedule for the picnic will be as follows: 3:00 pm Kids Games, 4:00 pm Parish Game, 4:30 pm Dinner, 5:30 pm Bingo and Moon Bounce from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm.   Chicken, hot dogs, corn and beverages will be provided.   The cost of the picnic will be $5 per person with a maximum charge of $20 per family.  Watch the bulletin for updates!

LOW-GLUTEN ALTAR BREADS

Some of our parishioners are intolerant to wheat products. Low-gluten hosts are approved by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. These hosts contain only .01% of gluten. If you would like more information, please talk to Father Ken.

TRANSITIONS…

◦Next Sunday at the 11:00 a.m. Mass we welcome E. John Kelly C.S.S.R. (Redemptorist), as our presider. He is Sister Kathleen's brother and will lead us at Mass as we honor Sister Kathleen for her many years of service to our parish community. Following this Mass, there will be a reception to bid farewell to Sister Kathleen. Religious education students and catechists are especially invited.

◦Mrs. Gina Musser is our new Program Manager for Religious Education. She has been a catechist for many years and has also been supportive of our Youth Ministry. Her responsibilities will be the "managerial" part of the program: facilities, books and materials, registration and administrative tasks.

◦Mrs. Jamie Dillon will expand her scope of work in the parish. She will continue to be Director of Catholic Youth Ministry, but in addition she will coordinate our Eighth Grade Confirmation Program and will be responsible for support and supervision of our catechists.

◦A short note about Confirmation. The Pastoral Council unanimously recommended to me that Confirmation be moved from the Fall of Eighth Grade to the Spring. In mid or late September we will have a meeting with parents and eighth grade students about this years Confirmation Program.

WOMEN'S CATHOLIC SCRIPTURE STUDY

This is an in-depth study of EXODUS that will run September through May on Tuesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. (We will follow the Fox Chapel Area School District calendar.) The first class is Tuesday, September 9, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the St. Scholastica Parish Hall. Any woman (you don't have to be Catholic) is welcome to join this group! In addition to learning so much about our Lord and His Church, you will also have a great opportunity to fellowship with others in our community. The registration fee is $50 and covers all materials needed for the 30 week course. That is less than the price of a cup of coffee each week! THE YEAR OF ST. PAUL

Families of the diocese are invited to share in a special Family Fest for the Year of St. Paul. It will take place on Saturday, August 23, 2008 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at St. Paul Seminary. A Mass with Bishop Zubik presiding will highlight the event. There will be a catered picnic lunch, games, races, a tour of the seminary and lost more. The cost is $5 per person or $25 for the whole family. "Protecting God's Children" is a one-time seminar required by the Diocese, for any parish volunteer or staff person whose work in the parish puts them in contact with children. CONTEMPLATIVE OUTREACH 2008 ANNUAL CONFERENCE

TRANSITIONS

Official Installation

Next Sunday, Bishop Zubik will preside at the 11:00 Mass. At that time, I will be installed as pastor of St. Scholastica. Pastoral Council members of both St. Thomas More and St. Scholastica Parishes will represent my transition between the two communities. There will be a reception following the Mass.

Now that I've been "in the saddle" for three weeks, I am settling into some daily routines of parish life and ministry. I am grateful for your continuing support and encouragement as we all adjust to new beginnings and new opportunities.

THANK YOU

Please join us as we say "thank you" and Godspeed" to Sr. Kathleen Kelly, S.S.N.D., after 20 years of service to the catechetical ministry of St. Scholastica Parish. Sr. Kathleen has decided that, though she will miss you, this is the appropriate time, given the change in pastors, to complete her service to the community of St. Scholastica. In a few weeks we will honor Sr. Kathleen at a Sunday Mass, immediately followed by a reception in the Pastoral Center. Please join us as we thank Sr. Kathleen for her many years of gracious service to our faith community. Former students and catechists are especially encouraged to participate. ADORATION OF THE

BLESSED SACRAMENT

Eucharistic Adoration on August 7^th and 8^th -- Pope Benedict XVI has called for a special Year of Saint Paul to begin June 28, 2008 and run to June 29, 2009 as a celebration of the 2,000th anniversary of the birth of the saint. Accordingly the Diocese of Pittsburgh has scheduled a Year of Eucharistic Adoration for the Year of St. Paul with each parish assigned days and times when the sacred host is to be placed outside the tabernacle and at least one worshipper is to be present at all times. St. Scholastica's has been assigned two such times: from 7PM on Thursday, August 7^th until 9AM on Friday, August 8^th and then again from 7PM on Monday, January 5^th until 8:30AM on Tuesday, January 6^th. All are encouraged to come to the Church and pray before the Blessed Sacrament during these scheduled times. Please consider committing to spend a scheduled hour of adoration during our assigned August 7^th through 8^th period by signing the book available in the entrance area.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION

On the weekend of August 9th & 10th, we are asking all religious education families to register for this coming year. After all the Masses we will accept registrations in the Pastoral Center.

LAST CALL!

The Diocese of Pittsburgh is planning its annual Golden Wedding celebration for couples who have been married for 50 years. The celebration will begin with a Mass at St. Paul Cathedral on Sunday, October 12 at 3:00 p.m. Bishop Zubik will be the celebrant. A reception will follow. If you and your spouse are celebrating your 50^th Anniversary any time during 2008, and would like to attend this joyous event, please call the rectory or drop us a line not later than this Monday, July 28. Invitations will be sent out after responses have been received.

RETREAT AND HEALING

How does the Church help Catholics address political and socials questions?

Doing good and avoiding evil. (continued from last week)

Opposition to intrinsically evil acts also prompts us to recognize our positive duty to contribute to the common good and act in solidarity with those in need. Both opposing evil and doing good are essential. As Pope John Paul II said, "the fact that only the negative commandments oblige always and under all circumstances does not mean that in the moral life prohibitions are more important than the obligation to do good indicated by the positive commandment" (Veritatis Splendor, no. 52). The basic right to life implies and is linked to other human rights to the goods that every person needs to live and thrive—including food, shelter, health care, education, and meaningful work. The use of the death penalty, hunger, lack of health care or housing, human trafficking, the human and moral costs of war, and unjust immigration policies are some of the serious moral issues that challenge our consciences and require us to act.

Making moral choices.

Difficult political decisions require the exercise of a well-formed conscience aided by prudence. This exercise of conscience begins with always opposing policies that violate human life or weaken its protection. "Those who formulate law therefore have an obligation in conscience to work toward correcting morally defective laws, lest they be guilty of cooperating in evil and in sinning against the common good" (Catholics in Political Life, 2004).

When morally flawed laws already exist, prudential judgment is needed to determine how to do what is possible to restore justice—even if partially or gradually—without ever abandoning a moral commitment to full protection for all human life from conception to natural death (see Evangelium Vitae, no. 73).

Prudential judgment is also needed to determine the best way to promote the common good in areas such as housing, health care, and immigration. When Church leaders make judgments about how to apply Catholic teaching to specific policies, this may not carry the same binding authority as universal moral principles but cannot be dismissed as one political opinion among others. These moral applications should inform the consciences and guide the actions of Catholics.
